Thanks JagLite.
How do you mean John?

John Hopkins

You are doing a great job, but to be honest and at the risk of making a fool of myself, that looks like a faulty casting..

John.

These pic's show the work done on the heads by the welder and the machine shop.
I did 2 before and 1 after for each, front and back. Where you see the pink dye from the machinist you can see the material added by the welder. They were then touched up by the machinist to make sure the welds weren't too high. I can now use the Right Stuff Gasket Maker in addition to a regular gasket and have a good seal.

Your right there Troll, rather get it out of the way now.

I that 3 pointed 'crown' ring on the output shaft to the bevel drive (in the bottom picture) the 'slipper' clutch actuator?

That is the Kawasaki equivalent of a Harley compensator sprocket. There are a matching set of ramps on the input gear, held tight by a spring, that keeps the whole thing in contact.

While it's down this far, replacing the bearing is an easy process. Sure beats sending metal filings through the engine you just rebuilt.

Here are a couple of shots of the front bevel gear. I will be replacing the bearing as suggested by Troll.

I wonder what would be the maximum bore could be done to increase displacement? I disremember what the bore/stroke combo is on the 1600cc  engine as in the Mean Streak.

In all honesty I think it would be a waste of time..the 1600 meanstreak gives an extra top speed of about 3mph.. the Vtwin was never really designed for speed.. if you want the look and the speed go for a Vmax gen ll ...

I've become disillusioned with speed, my Drifter has a proven top speed of 107mph and I have a Yamaha R1 Dynamite race tuned that has a proven speed of 186mph.. but the top speed limit in this country is 70mph and there is not one road in the entire country that will allow me to ride the full length at that speed, since the government discovered the revenue that could be made from speed limits and cameras I have to watch carefully for speed reductions on every road..it takes the fun out of riding..

These pic's detail the alternator rotor which has been damaged. If you look close at the first pic you can see little chunks of the magnet removed. Followed up with a pic of the metal shavings built up on the pickup coils. The last pic is just to show that the rotor is in fact...a magnet.

No the pic with all those coils is the rotor and it has laminated cores to each coil to prevent magnetism, the stator is so called because it is static..it doesn't turn..

Incidently those coils in the third pic look overheated, although I am not an expert on Drifters so you should get a confirmation from Chief before you panic..

John.

Elmo Hayride

Thanks for the heads up. I will order it tonight.

Troll

Here's a thought. While you have it all apart, there is a $35 bearing in the bevel drive that could and does fail. Mine went at about 75,000 miles and, although it didn't do any real damage to anything, it did cause quite a bit of angst and frustration....You have it all apart now, so a little preemptive replacement could save you lots of grief down the road....

From what I can tell, no Drifters used a POG, and none of the injected 1500s used it, either. It was strictly a carbed 1500 thing...

That is correct. No POGs on Drifters.

Troll, what year used the plastic oil pump gear?

Thank you for your suggestions Troll. If anything seems funny along the way I'll certainly ask you so (hopefully) nothing gets missed.
