My clutch problem was that, at 33,000 and 65,000 it started slipping badly and, both times, my dealer, Depot Honda in Portsmouth, NH, rebuilt it with the original parts which wear out as explained here and in the Clutch Rebuild section of this wonderful site.
My clutch works like a real one now, roll on acceleration is phenomenal compared to either of the three clutches I had before using the Mean Streak spring and Judge washers.

There isn't a clutch problem specifically for the 99... until 2005-6 Kaw used a single holder and spring setup. This allowed the clutch spring to overflex causing premature failure... ie clutch would slip. Since then, they added a second holder and beefed up the spring. So, when you clutch starts slipping upgrade to this new setup. There is a mod/tip on this over in the mods/tips on the website.

I turned 76,000 today and the 1999 clutch problem was the only one I had.  Kawasaki makes subway trains for NY, NY; first scheduled maint. is 200,000.  Motorcycle reliability is a cinch for them.

What is the 1999 clutch problem?  I have a 99 and haven't heard about this yet.

Thanks for the replies guys. The price seems to be good, $2,800.00 for the bike. Like I said, in the pictures the bike looks nice, it's the beige color with black frame, and has a tan colored solo seat on it as well. I might have to drive over and take a look at it...it's just that it's almost 4 hours away from where I live. Thanks again for the replies!

no 20k nowadays is nothing. But it does depend upon maintenance over that 20K .

I wouldn't think twice about buying it if the price was within reason. I bought mine this year with 17,000 on it and have 21,000 on it now. Lots of guys buy Drifters and don't ride them much it seems. There are a lot of them out there with 5,000 miles or less.
The only thing I would look at if it were me is the chain and sprockets to see how worn they are.

Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying another Drifter but I haven't seen the bike yet in person, just pictures. It does seem to look great but it has 20k miles on it. Is that considered a lot for an 800cc bike? According to the owner it's been taken care of properly with all oil changes, maintenance, etc. It's been garage kept as well all the time. I'm just wondering if 20k is a lot or not.

Thanks
