If you can move the fork bag to handlebars or get windshield bag setup to replace it for small items.  I don't have a shield (have to stay cool in hot Texas sun) but hers a pic to help.  A small side bag is nice as well.

Honestly, if I didn't need the shield I wouldn't have one on either, just for looks alone, but getting caught in the rain or with a 20 degree temp drop means it comes on the long trips and off for the short ones.

The guy I got the bike from gave me a nice little pouch he wanted to use as a side bag and never did...  I'll see what I can do with it!

Got it, and love it, and THANKS!!!  I actually do have the service manual but I like the digital version too... that way you can print just the pages you need and throw them out when you're done and they are grease covered...

Got a good suggestion for keeping the fork bag from sliding down and rubbing on the fender?

I used some small black zip ties and zipped them to the light bar.  My bag is too big, so I need to get a shorter one, but you can just make out the zip ties in this pic.

Yeah...take the damn thing off. There is no good reason to have such a thing, and all it does is mess with handling

It's off!  There WAS one on it.  I don't have one. But I like a small pouch for essentials on long trips (usually a phone charger, tire pressure gauge, ear plugs and aspirin) and usually use a windshield pouch, but on this bike the pouch is so close to the risers I can't get it open and closed very easily.

And...  A fork bag would let me keep that stuff handy when I take the shield off.

Might do a shaft pouch instead...

But your not wrong, I don't like the wear marks on the fender.

Thanks Pastor, I'll check it out. Prefer not to change cables/hoses unnecessarily...  But I have long arms and not a big fan of the pull back. With a straight riserand bars tilted forward I think I'd be more comfortable.

Scootworks makes risers that are pretty popular on these bikes.  Look for Phat Risers and Phat Risers II.  A lot of people use them on these bikes because they have good specs and you don't need to change cables and hoses.

Thanks. That's exactly what I thought. So now, like my 800, I assume the triple tree was bored out for the new SAE risers...

Which I guess is okay, just means I have to look for SAE risers.

Pretty sure my risers are not OEM...  I have 4" up 1" back, but the giveaway is they have SAE bolts. Anyone have a pic of what they should be on a '99 1500?

Thanks for the tip... Always looking for a way to make something easier! I'm actually not a true "clean fanatic"... I will always choose riding over cleaning. I actually felt a little awkward when this was done, because when it's too clean, it looks less "enjoyed"!

But, like the title of the thread says, it's new to me and I want to start with a blank slate... Put my OWN dirt on her!

  Ok here is how you keep the tires clean and never have to bend your back or move your arms to keep them clean. The hardest part is for you to go to Canadian Tire and buy the following, Mr. Clean Magic eraser sponges, and Spry Nine. If you can find Scrub Daddy sponges it also helps. Then you go home with your purchases, and do the following:
Fill a med size bowl with warm water,
spray the Spray Nine all over the tires and let it soak a few mins if You have a jack this is super easy.
if no jack then you have to do the tire cleaning walk down the driveway.
After the Spray Nine has had time to work a bit the start to scrub gentle with the Mr. Clean
the really stubborn stuff will come off the white walls. You should at this point be sitting in your chair
the beer is cold and the sun is shining but of course you are in the shade.
Oh yes you have 3 boys, one for each tire and the youngest to be the gopher.
See really simple and super easy. I do this when needed but then I have to do it because I have no kids.

Thanks guys... It really does look bad in the picture!  Must be the angle or distortion because I'm sure I'd have seen that. I also cleaned the hub so I was all over that area...  I can't be that blind. I appreciate the heads up though and will check tonight for sure.

Those speedo cables have a tendency to break.  Replacing with a Nomad cable fixes the problem as it's a couple of inches longer.

We've all seen tires MUCH worse that that...now, unless the picture is distorting it, you better address that speedo cable before it breaks....

Makes me laugh because I have never brought a bike in for service until this one...  Blew a tube and my dealer changes them for $40.  I can't take my own time to beat that price.

But they asked me the colour since this bike wasn't on file, and I couldn't bring myself to say anything other than GOOSEBERRY!

I looked at my receipt and it said red...  How disappointing...
