I was there this afternoon.  I didn't see you around and it was quiet so I didn't want to wake you in case you were napping, so I left.

Side note...  CRAZY amount of loose connectors on this thing...  The primary case bolts were almost all loose.  The gas tank bolt under the seat was missing.  There was only one of two seat bolts on it.  There are threaded holes all over it that are missing bolts.  No idea what they were or if they were important but I'm working on it.  CHECK YOUR FASTENERS!!!  I know it's common convo to check them, but it can't be overstated enough.

I got cocky once a few years ago and just assumed I'd know when I had a loose fastener that was important, until I found my steering head bolt physically loose and turnable by finger tips...

Oh, and I discovered that it did have either a trailer or sidecar at some point...  there is a 4-pin flat trailer wire connector hiding under the tool box cover... unless someone tells me that was stock?!  It's a good, clean install...

I did consider it...  Still am. My local dealer is pretty good, may even have one...  But that hole is threaded and I can tell there as something once there so I used it.

Did you think to order part #92037 and put it into the hole I marked and see if that helps I know your a Master Carpenter but sometimes......you just need a little help......

My wiring passes through the same area and I just retape it every year.

It wasn't obvious either.  Just coincidentally caught my eye... those pretty, colourful wires weren't showing, there was chewed up electrical tape covering them.  It was the frayed ugly tape that caught my eye.  I took a few ripped pieces off and notices the wires underneath had been pinched but not broken.

Quick question...  I just discovered that there is a bracket/harness missing that clamps the wiring harness that feeds into the headlight.  REALLY glad I noticed because the wiring bundle was being pinched at the steering lock...  pending disaster.

Anyone have a pic of what actually belongs there?  (1500, left side frame at steering head)

I'm a big fan of staying true to stock for stuff like that, but I may just fab somethign anyway...  just want to know what it actually looks like.

No...  Instead I go to a web site, pay premium dollar in U.S. Funds, add shipping, and end up with probably not much better than what you have, if any. 

I do like it though...  Wicked strong, but ya I could have done it way cheaper.

And wait...  I think I got it when our dollar was actually HIGHER than the U.S. Dollar!

   Don't go to Wal-Mart, go and buy it at the real man store Canadian Tire, and use your card, get some food and car stuff and even clothing and you will be satisfied......

Go to the Walmart craft section and spend a dollar or two and you can get the magnet.  It's the same kind of stuff you use for refridgerator magnets.  When you change filters you just take the magnet off of the old one and put it on the new one......simple.

I have a long, flexible strip magnet that I wrap around the outside of the filter and just leave it there.  I figure that it makes the whole filter a giant magnet, and that's a good thing!

I supposed you couldn't have told me that 5 years ago before I spent the $ on a filter mag...

Yessir...  agreed completely.  Just fascinated that the specs are so different...  and so much less oil than the 800.

I would tend to default to the factory sticker on the case and double check the window, and I'm so anal I actually use a funnel with meaurement markings on it, but I'm a curious person!

As a side note, I also use a FilterMag <filtermag.com> on the filter to pull any metal dust out of the bloodstream, and a magnetic drain plug.  Anything to keep that 710 clean!

The specs for a '99 say oil, 4.0L w/ filter change, 3.5L w/o filter change.
The sticker on my engine case says 3.1 w/ filter, 2.9w/o (3.5L complete dry).

That's a pretty substantial difference...  That's less oil than my 800. Thoughts?

The easy way to "get it right" is to always fill your new filter, so the engine doesn't run dry on startup, then, with the bike level, look on the right lower engine case and find the small glass site just below the oil fill cap.  Your level should be just a shade above half way up the site.  Once done, run the engine a minute to circulate everything, turn it off and let it sit a few minutes so everything drains back down, and check the level again and top off if necessary.

I never even left here, was raining in the morning and well into the day at 1400 I called a no show, I am a Candy A$$ 5 hours in the rain, just did not excite me, and then Sunday was forecast for rain all day ...so another 5 hours in the rain......I could not subject my old and tired bike to that kind of treatment......

No condemnation from me.  It's like I always say, I'm not afraid to ride in the rain if it starts up, but I don't go looking for it!
