Such a bizarre conversation.     It reminds me when we were kids going to the shore with our parents.  We would wrap potatoes in aluminum foil and put them on the intake manifold.  When we got to the shore we would have baked potatoes waiting for us under the hood.

A lot of this comes from the "Let's see if we can get the foreigners to eat something disgusting by telling them it is a local delicacy"..I think an Arab started it with sheeps eyes..but it could have been a Scot with salt on porrige..

There is that language thing again..Ok I know 16 oz is what you call a pint and we call 20 oz a pint, and I think you call a soda what we call a carbonated drink IE:- coke, fanta, and other 'fizzy' drinks..so what is the problem with a 20 oz soda..is it too big.. we buy any size from 6 oz to 3 litres..I really don't understand this one..

Then Chief mentioned salt..That has to be a joke..protection of slugs or something..I was wondering about the first Frenchman to eat a snail..do you think he had trouble getting it out of it's shell..then he saw a slug and probably thought it was pre-prepared food..until he put salt on it..

nhtrikes: No offence taken by me, you are spot on in many respects, political correctness and the government trying to "bubble wrap" everyone for their own protection is becoming the norm rather that the exception here in Australia, even more than in the USA [I lived in Colorado form 2001 - 2006 so saw a lot of how your system works]. Though I have to state that the people in Australia are the greatest but that's a whole different discussion .

Don't apologise....you got it right. The important thing is that the law was overturned by the adults in the room. Bloomberg calls himself an independent, and he is...independent of all common sense. New York is home, I just live in Wisconsin.

Just re-read my rant. Humblest apologies if I offended anyone, especially anyone here from NY. That was not my intention at all. Just an old NH 'yank' shootin' off his mouth, going deaf and a few misplaced marbles to boot. If I could have, I would have removed the post after I calmed down. Next time I will take a walk, do some deep breathing exercises and count to ten before I start typing! The problem with common sense is it not very common anymore, and because of that the government has taken upon itself to pass laws that are suppose to protect people from themselves. Comes at a huge price, freedom. The other problem is the number of self-sufficient people with common sense are now a minority in this country, and the ones that depend on the government for their personal welfare are the majority that is why these laws that take away freedoms are passed and accepted by the majority of the public. We are loosing this battle here in NH as well. Still no helmet law here but it's a matter of time. Still can't believe New York makes it unlawful to sell/buy a 20 oz. soda, God knows I would never, but hell, if I want one  . . .  and people just accept it!!!! Sorry, my blood boils when I see what's happening to this country. The people in this country are still the greatest, that's what makes us, defines us. Not our government! Personal responsibility is a lot like common sense...those who will, do..those who won't....hmmm what should I say here? You know what I mean, so I'll leave it to your imagination.

Well, I've been in the safety business for a good chunk of time. There are things that MUST be mandated to force your employer, the government, or whomever to provide for a safe living environment. Then there are things you should do to protect yourself. The problem is, the government has encroached into that latter area way too far, IMHO. AND, people ASSUME a lot about the effectiveness of PPE's... personal protective equipment.

A law is not a suitable substitute for personal responsibility IMHO.

This is the way it should be..an old chestnut the helmet law..

It is a good sensible law but if we have a choice most of us would not wear a helmet when test riding a motorcycle so that we could hear the engine and any faults before buying..as it stands the police use many of these laws as a way or raising money..

I can't see riding without the proper gear, but I see that many peeps do.

BTW, I just got my summer jacket (in hi-viz).  Fits great.  I'll take it for a ride on the weekend.  I also ordered the CE back armor plate.

In Europe, in some countries you will get a fine if you don't wear proper motorcycling gear. A helmet allways has to be worn.
I fell one time without wearing a motorcycle pants, and I will not do that again (both falling and not wearing proper pants).

for my riding I always wear gloves, eye protection, temp and weather decide on long pants/chaps,T shirt/coat/raingear, now my arthritis dictate's footwear, normally boots on all rides, unless I have a bad swelling then sneakers.

Greenbarn you said you want a picture of me in my bikini riding my bike......I'll pm that to you.

I see this all the time. I never ride in shorts but I am guilty of riding with a t-shirt.

See, Ratman, you're not understanding one thing:  These are the guys who leave home SURE THEY WON'T BE INVOLVED IN A WRECK.    See, if you were just as sure as THEY were, you could ride half dressed TOO.  (don't take that as an invitation for more pictures...)   

What gets me the most is the guys who haul their girl around half dressed.....  not much respect for their girl, I guess....
