bad pipes, or rejetting

most of our bikes are jetted lean at the factory.just to get them through the EPA certs. if the air filter isn't stock and the pipes are modified, then you may be a bit leaner. if it were mine.... i would look into just adding a shim under the carb needle. this will give you a bit richer top end, and not sacrifice mileage. many folks go overboard when jetting .they think they need the biggest sizes for everything.

I was having trouble with the running of my 99 800, removed baffle then I found there were no exhaust gaskets so I put some on, then I removed the EPA or pollution control stuff, then adjusted the air/fuel mixture screw and now it runs just beautiful
I'm NO MECHANIC but couldn't afford to take it to a shop so I just went at it usinging the guys on this site and these

Take your time take dig. pics so you know how things go back together and label everything
It wasn't easy for me took about 1 1/2 weeks 4 or 5 hours /day but it sure was worth it
cost me about $40.00 parts $ $60.00 new tools I figure I saved at least $1000.00

Ok, so we all know the mess my bike was when I got it, its got the new motor now, and is my dream in a bike......but its now doing something I did not notice before, because I was just so happy to have her back.  The guy I got it from trashed it, its horrible, and one of the things he did was bust out the baffles in the pipes. so here is what its doing, it has a hesitation at the top end of all the gears, like its running out of gas kind of.  but then I shift up to the next gear and its fine.  I have always been told its better to run a bike at the top end of the gears, than to always be chugging away in the lower end of the next gear up. oh and for the most part its an 03 800.  The motor is from an older year, late 90's but the pipes are stock.  Is this because the pipes are "modified" like they are, or perhaps a performance jet kit would fix it? Oppinions? I ask my wizzard/mechanic, and he says "you really need new pipes and a jet kit", then he gets excited and goes on with all the things he wants to do haha but we have topped out the bike budget for a while.
