the petcock may be gummed up  and not flowing ... don't ask how i found that out...

The island that I live on is in the middle of a power outage due to a big wind storm. I did venture out to my friends garage. It's too dark to do any wrenching but, I did check and the petcock was on reserve (I turned it off) and the kill switch on the right grip was not on. If there is power tomarrow, I will go back and wrench on it some......  jb

Isn't the 800 equipped with a "fuel pump" ?  Could the fuel pump not be pushing gas to the carburetor after the cycle starts and runs for a short time on the fuel left in the fuel line or starter fluid ?  The fuel petcock certainly could come into play here.

What position is the petcock in?

The 1500 has this switch, not sure about the 800. I though it was only on the FI bikes. On the 1500 just moving the bike upright resets it. It is located at rhe rear fuel tank mounting bolt, again on the 1500. Bike does not even crank when this switch is tripped.  Found that out just after I purchase mine. Do not know if any of this helps any. Now I will ask the "why did I think of that question"; The 800 has a manual fuel valve on the bottom of the tank, it is on isn't it? If fuel is low maybe even put the valve on reserve.

1999 or 2000. I'm not sure. It's a blacked out version.

I am trying to get a friends 800 to start. He has cancer, and really wants to be able to ride when he gets home from the Treatment Center. I have replaced all the fluids, filters, and plugs. It will start if I spray "starter fluid" into the carb, but only for a few seconds. I have heard that the 800 had a stop switch that would shut off the fuel, if the bike was on its side. Is this true? If so, how do I reset it?  Any ideas????  Thanks,  jb
