Tank Badge Removal ?

I know this is an "old" thread but I just did my Drifter last week and it was easy.

Grab some new 15lb fishing line.  Heat stock emblem with heat gun.  Use fishing line to saw between the emblem and tank (I did edges all around first and doubled the fishing line.  Probably reheated each emblem 3 times during the process).  Using the fishing line will not damage the tank.
To get the underlying silicone (?) off from the emblem was easy too.  Soak a rag in gas then rub the rag over the area until you feel it soften up then gently scrape it off with your thumbnail until it becomes difficult then repeat.  Seriously, it took all of 5-10 minutes to get it completely off.

Before putting on my Indian emblems, I cleaned the tank several times with dish washing liquid/water and then, before installation, I cleaned the spot with alcohol.

DC , thanks for the suggestions on glue removal. I had great results in the past with Goo-Gone, cleaning sticker residue/glue off of an NOS windshield. A while back I bought an NOS Kawasaki windshield and it had a Kawasaki Vulcan clear plastic sticker on it from the factory. The sticker was peeling in several areas where the glue had released from long term storage and looked terrible. I was wondering how to remove it without damaging a new windshield. After researching, I decided to try Goo-Gone. It worked great and there wasn't a scratch on the windshield.

I used mineral oil and car wax to remove the gummy residue after removing a badge from a car I was selling.

I used Oomph (also called Gum off) a spray liquid from the hardware store for removing crayon, wax, labels, tar & grease. Used a fine fish line and hair dryer just taking my time. Then used the Oomph to clean up and washed with warm soapy water.

I used Blue Tac to hold the emblems after using the hair dryer to soften to shape of position on tank. Once happy with the emblem and position , I use a smear of clear silastic 1/4 inch in from edges to fix long-term.

What a pain in the neck the two times I've done it on two Drifter's.  I used a heat gun and was not worried damaging the stock decals, used fish line after warmed up, and still had plenty of emblem residue to remove with 3m adhesive remover / bumper sticker remover and heat gun.  Used several old wash cloths and rubbed the 3m to remove residue with heat. Kept turning and changing wash clothes as they got gummed up.  Took 1/2 hour for both sides and a lot of elbow grease.

agree and use plenty of wd40 while see-sawing it

but it looks a bit empty without them - and putting them back into exact position is a pain, a real pain.  Also - if you ever put them back on note that there is a slight difference in the curvature so there is a left and right side.

last comment: I think they look good in black ...

use fishing line and place it between the badge and tank and saw back and forth while pulling down..like your sawing the glue..may work better if you heat the badge with hair dryer first.
Then remove the adhesive residue with wd-40. clean and wax.

That's how I would do it.

I'm thinking about removing the gas tank badges from my '99. Is it possible to remove them without damaging the paint? If so how? Thanks
