Wow. I had a rectifier go bad on a harley. After a couple of hours of riding the bike would cough and quit. I sat on the side of the road a couple of times screwing around with it... after about 15 minutes it would start and I could limp home. It always started after sitting all night. On a trip from Evansville, IN to B'ham AL. It failed on me. I replaced the battery, but only got to Nashville. Everything was closed so I tried to make in on to AL.

The lights stopped working and I'd have to stop every 15 minutes or so to let the battery recharge. Then, around Athens AL I had a flat on the rear. Needless to say after midnight on Saturday was NOT the time to be stuck in Athens. I spent the night on the bike and the next day. On Monday my Dad brought up a trailer to tow the thing to his place.

Point to all this... a little problem only grows bigger it NEVER goes away. If something isn't right get it fixed. It ends up cheaper, safer and a lot easier.

Cheers.

i listen to your words, dear chief..
this weekend we will change her engine oil and oil filter...then i will get to service for the charging system....

Stein

I was going through batteries every year for about three years before I came to to the conclusion that my rectifier was shot. It's pricey but so is a new battery. Just something to think about.--

chief

That only checks the charging system.

At 3000 rpm, you should be getting between 14 and 15v.

If the voltage is a lot higher than 15v you have a bad rectifier, or the wires are loose, open etc.

If the voltage is a lot lower, you either have a bad rectifier or a load problem on the alternator.

I'd say 12.9v is a lot lower than you should be getting. 13.5 would be marginal at best.

Any bike shop should be able to check the charging system for you.

Personally, I'd start by changing the battery. Then testing the charging system. If not between 14 and 14v, I'd change out the rectifier as well. Its simply not worth getting stuck someplace.

Cheers.

i dont understand drifter22 , what are you talking abouth the sensor...you mean motion sensor...or ? please take a picture and put it this page about sensor...

drifter22

I had the same problem... I think... I had not used my bike since January 09.. I wanted to ride this weekend but the bike would not start. The battery was dead and I had it replaced. You would think that would be it but no. After installing the new battery the bike still would not turn over. After removing the tank and thinking it was the gas pump not working or the injectors being clogged. I gave up. came back the next day took a look at it again. Looks like I had the sensor disconnected the one the bolts right under the battery bracket. Sure enough the minute  i bolted that back up the bike started up. I hope that helps.. maybe you forgot to bolt the sensor back on.

we looked battery and charging system and got some consequences....
first the full battery(13.7 V) install to motor...then start the engine with idle speed...we linked our multimeter to battery..(+ to + and - to -)..and it showed 13.5V to 13,6...some times 12.9 V then i turned to throttle to 3000-5000 RPM and it didnt change any result..(i mean it showed same numbers...) is that wrong?.....should it  be change turn throttle 3000-5000 rpm?....by the way i remove the alternator three cables commination's and  it leaked (the oil) to my hand..is it normal...(i mean the connection to get full the oil...)...
then we look carrefully to oil indicator window and it looked under low line...which oil do you recommend to me?(10w / 40 ok,but which mark?)

hello all bros..
i charging my battery then we will try to understanding her charging system or whatever problem(s) this weekend...
by the way it's my question?
Do you recommend 14 Amper or 18 Ampers batteries for 99's 1500cc Drifter?

asklapios

i read carefuly your sending page dear pcarrell...
unfortunately i working hard for succesfully to USMLE...we will try to fixing old lady's problem on next weekend...
see you later all my big bros...
i will sent any information abouth this fix case!

if you got the drifter.....you got the style...

asklapios

dear drifter800 thanks,
how do i see engine rpm...my old lady 99s model...she hasnt got any rpm tachometer(or what)...should i idle speed up to top level maybe it will be full rpm performance...
somewhat apart i've got another question...when i do it what drifter800s say it then how do i test battery's amperage when engine running...
what is the true amperage?
please show me the way of teaching drifter repair....

drifter800

Test the battery with a voltmeter ,engine running about 2000 rpm. Should have at least 13.5. If battery is good, i'd certaintly look at the recticifier, maybe the connection plug for corrosion.Simple stuff first, right guys?

pcarrell

I'd look to see that none of the wiring is nicked or damaged in any way.  It lives in a rather harsh environment, ya know?  Beyond that, I'm not sure.

asklapios

first of all thanks all my bros....
pcarrell i got it what the you and chief mean it about rectifier...thanks for this beauty picture..
ok...well how do i find problem on my bike's rectifier?....what should i test rectifier?...i look carefully clymer repair book then i couldnt find any solves...anyone got idea?.......

chief

Yeah, as indicated unless someone has moved it to the front. If this is bad, the battery will eventually discharge even while the engine is operating. I had the same problem on a harley...

Cheers.

Drifterdamien

the rectifier cable is under the black plastic cover on the left hand side on the engine
i have the 1999 1500 model

i will be happi to answer ur questions if you get stuck

pcarrell

The rectifier is that thing that looks like a heat sink on the lower left side of the bike, in front of the rear tire.  The wiring runs inside the engine cover just in front of it.  On a '99 it might be run in a different way since you don'r have the chrome engine cover.  The rectifier is in the same spot though.  I've highlighted it in this pic........

asklapios

dear chief thanks for your reply but i dont know the rectifier....you mean regulator or what?...sorry i'm not repairman..i'm just a doctor my big bro...please help me this conversation....all my respect to dear chief...
