There are plastic panels inside, already. I thought about the cutting boards, but decided that the bottom and ends are what really needs beefing up. These brackets don't steal any space inside.

I have the stiffener brackets in both bags, now and the quick release framework for the whole thing is coming together. When I'm done with it, I'll be able to go from tourer to solo and back again by just removing 4 chrome acorn nuts....Here's a shot inside the bag of the bracket I made to keep them from sagging. They are actually a little larger than the slant bags I have been using for years, just a different shape. Now that they won't fall in on themselves, they will be easier to load. I'm thinking I should be able to get at least as much into these as I did the open tops...two bags of groceries in each one!

I'm thinking of using cutting board pieces in mine.  Is there an advantage or disadvantage to going either way?

I have been thinking of doing almost the same thing to those Harley bags I put on. They are very old, and sag pretty bad; the water and paper didn't work as good on them. The back wall of the bag has a galvanized thin plate riveted in, manufactured that way. I'm thinking of buying some thin auto-body patch panels, galvanized as well, cutting to the width of the bottom, curving it to fit from the top edge all the way down, across the bottom, and up to the back to the top edge, , then cutting heavier strips to make the same kind of brackets you did, Troll to hold everything together. They will be like new in comparison to now. Now all I need is some ambition......lol. Need to finish the handful of project already on the go before I start more.  :)

I've done that kind of thing with leather goods before. Works for a while, and then you have to do it again. I weighed all my options and decided to make some permanent engineering changes. A simple U shaped bracket, 7" across, with 2 1/2" ears pop riveted into the front and back ends, right at the seam does several things. Keeps the plastic inserts in place, straightens out the ends and the top, and will never need to be re treated to maintain the shape. I used 3/16" aluminum pop rivets and stainless washers to attach the brackets, made of 1/8" x 3/4" mild steel from the hardware store. Now the bag I have done looks like it's stuffed full for the road, but it's empty. The zippers on the top work better, too since there are no ripples in the top leather. I have a few more spots to touch up with dye, and then I'll oil them...but it's pretty early into winter to get done with a project....One done, one not... pretty easy to see the difference

I had a set on my Drifter when I purchased it; other than the smallish size they were great. When they started to sag, I emailed Osprey and this is what I was told to do: I filled them with hot water, let them set for a bit, then dumped the water and packed them full of crumpled newspaper and I mean PACKED them with it. When they dried, oiled them down, and good to go. That was the only issue I had with mine. I ended up selling them and putting some vintage Harley (large) leather bags on in their place.

I just finished the stiffeners for the bags...like 15 minutes ago. I'm going to add some 1" webbing underneath to support the bottom a little better. These are used and have lots of miles on them. They took black leather dye very well, and came out looking almost new. A little massaging and they will look and function 100% for me. I use my luggage for both travelling and for trips to the grocery or other stores, all the time. They will see lots more use....

Hello Jeff
Sorry to hear you had a bad go with the folks at Osprey.

I picked up a set for my project bike  2011 - they did take a tad bit  longer to arrive than initially suggested, BUT to be fair it was explained delivery time frame may be extended due to ongoing demands.   Wasn't keen on the easy bracket that came with the set but it worked and worked very well.

That said the osprey bags were well made, look incredible on my machine, were exactly what i was looking for.    i get positive comments all the time.

Bottom line would i order from osprey again?  For me, yes.   No question.

Most unfortunate you had a negative experience.   Check out troll's thread.  He just scooped a set from woodcraver - bike looks awesome,  no doubt yours will as well.

Stay safe
Cheers
Brad

I am so disgusted with this guys customer service, when I ordered them he said 10 weeks, it has taken over 14 weeks. He screwed up my address so it took 2 extra days with UPS and I waited at home so they wouldn't get stolen off my porch then he sends me two of the same mounting brackets, argh....two nice days of weather here and a trip planned to the coast because now I have bags and I am screwed, has anyone else had issues with this company's customer service because quite frankly it is atrocious..
