.... tonight after work went and poked around and found that the left front wire wasn't seated properly on the plug. May have been the culprit.

I occasionally find my caps are loose and just resting on the end of the plug.  Not sure what gives with that - it's not like I'm bumping into the wires and accidentally pulling them off, in fact, I have to reef on them to get them off when I need to.  But somehow, they seem to occasionally pop off on their own. :o

OK thanks Troll. I just noticed from the one time I had to leave the bike out overnight in the rain that I had a heck of a time starting it, and also that after a pressure wash it started hard so I assumed, probably erroniously that I had a crack in a wire, tonight after work went and poked around and found that the left front wire wasn't seated properly on the plug. May have been the culprit.

Right after you take off the fuel tank, the coils should be pretty obvious.....BUT.. Why are you even thinking about doing this? You can't just use any old 8mm wire, and the armored ones you have now are probably better quality than anything you can buy to replace them. Kawasaki doesn't sell just the wires, you have to get coil assembles at about $100 each.....here, look at this link: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/Motorcycle/2001/VN1500-R1+Vulcan+1500+Drifter/IGNITION+SYSTEM/parts.html
