Mine came with a K&N 204 on it, and I just put on a new K&N 204 again.

I guess I don't understand- was the original "bad" filter on the 2003 an internal/cartridge filter?  Maybe not all the '03's had this filter?

It will be obvious if you have the filter recall installed... its a frame with different filter (internal).

SO how does one tell if his or her 2003 1500 has had the recall done, to fix the oil filter "problem", or if it needs fixing??

If you've got the kit mentioned at the bottom of the recall on your bike, you're good!  http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/mc0404.html

That would be a question for a dealer. They can check VINs to see if the recall was done

Actually I am glad the filter fits a bunch of bikes. That means I can find one at almost any parts store.  I remember having a Triumph and hoeing to buy my filters at the dealer because nothing else fit.  Cha-ching!!

You probably have the right part.  The only drifter that takes a different or wierd filter is the '03 1500 I think.  They changed the setup that year and had "issues" (read: recalls!), so the next year they went back to the old setup.

Yep, the K&N's I use work on my Drifter AND my Goldwing. Many filters fit many types of vehicles.

It's not uncommon for many engines to use the same oil filter, I got one of the reusable ones and it fit a lot of different bikes. As a side note, and what seems to be odd at least to me is that my 86 Mustang with a turbo engine uses the same filter as my 94 Jeep Wrangler.

I was doing an oil change today on my 01 Drifter and I pulled a filter off the shelf that I had ordered the last time I ordered a bunch  of filters (Emgo 10-82230) and noticed that it said "Hon..." on the box and I started thinking that maybe I ordered them for my 84 Honda Ascot.  I did some Googling of the above EMGO number and it came up as fitting various Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki models including Kawasaki 1500 Classics and Nomads but no Drifter listed.  WTF?  I thought the engines in the 1500's were all basically the same?  Why would they take different filters?  In any case, I still had an OEM Kawasaki Drifter filter on the shelf so I used that but I need to order a new batch of replacements.

As a side note, my Ascot isn't listed under the above number but I'm pretty sure that's the filter I have in there  :o
