GB .... yes sir , I used the velcro . Let me tell ya that stuff is strong . I like the fact that It's not a permanent fixture . The first attempt I didn't like the placement of the "dummy cap " so I had to move it a few inches . The backing of the velcro is strong , but comes off with out any harm or residue left on the paint (tank ) . I attempted to gut the cap , like 2 beers , but was unsuccessful . So all I did was remove the butterfly stay inside the cap added a piece of cork board to the desired height and walla project completed . I'm working on getting the sticker for the oil cap now . The original WLA sticker for this were yellow and red , by doing so I'm thinking this will add that much more charater to the bike .

That's a good look, D1.   How did you end up fastening them on?  Did you go the velcro route?

Bride here's a pic of the set I bought . I like how the set up is on Mr. beer's with the chrome and black . I may end up doing mine black and painting the oil/gas lettering in the od green . We'll see ..... decisions, decisions

2beers that's a funny magnet story  I'd be a little worried of having a magnet that size laying around . Makes for good ammo for the miss's when she's head hunting  .

GB man story off my life , " day late and a dollar short . " I ordered a set of WLA style caps one even actually says " oil " on the cap . Paid $25 for the set . Know the question is do I leave them chrome or not . I'll have to wait and see when they arrive to do the famous stare for hours at them till a final decision is made  . The magnet idea can work, especially if you want to take the caps on and off the tank. Downsides, though...  The surface of the tank isn't flat, and the velcro allowed some 'give' to the mounting.   I'd be concerned that the paint could get scratched by a magnet.  Depending on the magnet's strength, the cap could grow legs and walk away with a passerby. The velcro makes it difficult to remove, but is still a remove-to-stock mod if desired.

Funny magnet story. At some point years ago i had an industrial magnet weighed 5 lbs and was about the size of a softball, but horseshoe shaped. I was known for misplacing my keys in the house. So, i placed that magnet inside the kitchen cabinet and found that i could toss my keys up there on the way into the house.  Worked great!  But didn't make The Bride too happy.

I hadn't thought of the roundness of the tank....  But I had considered the paint scratching so I planned to try to put a piece of cloth or leather 'tween the magnet and the paint.  I was going to try to get one of those rare-earth magnets which are pretty strong, so maybe it will work...   On the other hand the velcro is starting to sound pretty easy....

I can't believe SWMBO didn't like the 5# magnet on the table....?!!

You're TOO SLOW, D1.  I got one today already!!   Ordered it yesterday from my parts supplier.  For a 1972 (I think) F-150.    I wanted to see if it would work -  looks great for about $7.  I'm thinking of perhaps mounting some using a magnet.  Any thoughts anyone??

D1, that's a quick fix 'for now'.  Big truck chrome shops have all different types of lug nut covers (pointed, round, metal, plastic, chrome...all sizes).  I had a set laying around here and painted them black, they were a size that fit well.  I really want cylinder shaped covers but just haven't found them yet.

Sooooo I noticed the rear peg capped off . What does one use for this ? I'm stealing this one GB as MA-DUECE is a sprung seat so no 2 up riding going on .....

Fantastic  Thank you for the detailed info and pictures to go along with this mod . I was wondering how the center was filled and you summed that up , for me . Tell ya , the more I see "Blue "  the more I love this bike , but then again I've always been a huge fan of this color .

Well guys, 2beers is sitting here on the couch with me, and the "King of Facade" has more detail for you  .

The gas caps have to be gutted and ground down, then fitted with a piece of luan wood or similar material to build them up to the desired height.  The wood can fit tight, or use some JB to make sure it adheres well to the inside of the cap.  He painted the edge of the wood flat black for disguise. Take into consideration the height of the commercial grade velcro when you figure out your height.  The velcro he used comes in a wide strip and was cut in a circle for good adhesion to the parts.  The female velcro applies to the tank, the male velcro goes on the cap.  Prep the area of painted surface to remove wax prior to adhering, he used GoofOff, but be careful with your paint!

2beers liked this mod because of the look, he also likes that it's non-damaging and can be reversed, and it didn't kill the bank book!

GB I'll let you copy the mod .... as soon as I'm done    Like I said I've seen this done on a few bikes . In fact the first time I saw this was on George Fitzsimmons indianized 800 on you tube . Really does add an old school look .

Why I'm asking all the questions , as usual ....... You see 2beers the other guys leave the questions up to me for one or two reasons 1) they're far knowledgeable mechanics then I
2) they just know I'm going to ask any way  LOL ....
