Speedometer issue

The cable seems okay since it still spins okay but there could be a little bit of play in it. I'm out of town right now so I will try replacing it when I get back.

Oddly enough the odometer and trip mileage seem to be pretty accurate when I rode to work the last two days...

From what I have been reading, most people replace the Drifter cable with one from a Nomad, as it is a little longer

Mine turned out to be a broken cable, lesson learned, Drifter cables don't like to be yanked around.

Did you disconnect it from the speedo head, too? Loose connections with cable drive speedos cause all kinds of issues. While you are fooling around with it, I'd pull the core out and lube it. All you need is a little white lithium grease... Inspect the core and the housing to make sure it wasn't stretched when you took the wheel off. The drive fits into the wheel, and the drive adapter fits into the drive with 2 dogs. Be sure they are correctly seated in the drive.

It's a 2000. I just had the housing off yesterday and reconnected the cable after making sure it would spin properly so I don't think that's it but maybe I didn't tighten it enough or something.

A 99? Mine went haywire too just recently, I know exactly when it happened, I was maneuvering about the yard and was turning hard from lock to lock and I think I pulled it a bit out of the housing at the speedo. I haven't got around to fixing it yet. I'd pull the housing and check it. It's only a few screws.

I removed my front fender to paint it which means I had to take off the front wheel and all that stuff too... Now the speedometer is acting crazy. Most the time it just bounces around and when I turn the bike off the speedo will be stuck around 30 mph but if I roll the bike backwards a foot or two it goes back to zero.

I unhooked the cable at the wheel and was able to spin it by hand without any issue so I'm not sure what else to check at this point. I also took the axle nut off and retightened it to the proper torque just in case. The front wheel doesn't seem bound up or anything.

I just bought the bike a week or two ago and didn't put many miles on before I took the wheel off but I know that the speedo was working fine before.
