Oil leak help

Well, if you came all that way, the least we could do is to change the air in your tires, pack your muffler bearings, flush your blinker fluid, and overhaul your turbo encabulator.  Gonna be expensive, though.

You'd probly be bored, Ratman.  Mostly paperwork, ordering parts, writing invoices, answering the phone, bout like a secretary.  Course sometimes I get to "work".  Today I removed a down pipe on an S-10 and re-calibrated the steering sensors on a Saturn.

I'm just getting in on this thread, and CDRatman's kind and generous offer for me to help you out.  Sounds like more than a 1-case job to me.  I would have been glad to help you out if I could, but if they're doing it for you for 200, that's not too hateful.

Shingles suck. Especially when they're in the mouth. I'm going on three weeks now. The worst is behind me now. And I couldn't be happier. But the pain is still pretty intense at times. In the ear and teeth and jaw and skin and.... I just hope I'm not one of the lucky few who experience pain for a year after the fact.

No, they quoted me two hours of work. Flat fee. We'll see.

Sounds like they are estimating about 2 1/2 hrs...remember, there is only 200 cc of oil in the gear case...that's not much.

I have a ride Independence Day weekend. This is important because I asked them if they could have my bike done before or on July 3rd. After they saw the bike they agreed that it is probably the O rings or the seal. Now the shop doesn't have ANY of the parts I need. So, in order to speed things up, I get to bring in my own parts which I had to overnight to get by Monday morning. The shop also doesn't use Amsoil so I'm bringing that in as well. Don't ask me why they couldn't overnight it, I don't know. I do know I won't be up-charged for the parts or oil and that makes me happy. They quoted me $198+ tax for the job.  And if the seals and O rings isn't the problem, bike will be done by Wednesday.

Thanks, Troll. It looks like I'm taking it to a shop.  I don't have the tools for this job or the knowledge.

Yes, and the rear fender.  Once you get the rear wheel off the ground, and remove the caliper, lower the back end down 'till the tire is touching the ground,  take off the big nut on the axle, and slide the axle part way to the left. take the 4 nuts loose/ then off and the rear wheel will come off with the final drive still attached. The sliding joint on the prop shaft needs to be greased...not just a little, a lot! Be prepared, 'cause once the 4 nuts are loosened, oil will run out of the swing arm tube. In a perfect world, there should be no oil in this tube, that's what the seal and o rings are for. While it's apart, drain out the old gear oil and make sure you fill it correctly when you reassemble it. I would estimate this as a 2 hour job....ymmv. Remember, if you don't feel comfortable doing a job, don't do it unless you have someone there with you that knows what's going on. I would not be afraid of this, but I was an ASE Master tech for 45 years, and this isn't much different from a car.

The o ring leaking fills the drive shaft tunnel with oil until it drips out. The boot doesn't seal anything in, just dirt out.

Is this the diagram of the  final drive that bolts to the rear tire?  Because it seems to be leaking at the boot. MThe coil spring under the boot was off and we reattached it and took the bike for a ride. It didn't spray the rear tire with oil. Could that be the problem? Also the final drive was hot to the touch after a 20 minute ride.

I'm pretty sure I'm leaking final drive oil and I'm mostly sure it's leaking from here.
