Would the tach require an in-line resistor?

Thanks,

I bypassed the bikes electrical wires and connected the tach's power wire staight to the battery. It also pegged the needle. This makes me think that the $15 tach, being worth every penny that I paid for it, it probably NFG!
I thought, too, that maybe the the battery is over charged. But after sitting all Winter, the voltage increases in the battery? No, I don't think so. If that were the case, then all the lights would burn brighter, too. And they don't.
I appreciate everyone's help. It proves the effectiveness of this forum. I will look for a newer out-of-the-box tach and see what happens.

Thanks,

Does this help?

http://www.gadgetjq.com/tach_install.htm

Look towards the bottom of the page.

I'm not much help beyond this.

I wouldn't think so. I'm still trying to find some info on this problem. I know you aren't the only one who has had the problem!

Hopefully, some other folks will have some insight in the meantime.

Hello 'Chief':
I checked Gadget's site and created a diode/resistor harness for the two coils per his instructions. The needle still goes to the max peg at 8,000 rpm when the power is turned on, and the engine off. I checked the ground and it is good. The needle goes back to 0 when the ground is disconnected. I purchased the tach from a motorcycle shop that is going out of business as an off the shelf item. There is no manufacturer on the tach. Does the tach have to be re-calibrated?

Thanks,

I don't know the answer to this one... but will do some research for you.

Cheers.

I added a tachometer to my Drifter 800. Followed a simple wiring scheme. The problem is when 1 turn the key on, the tach needle is pegged to max! I know I read somewhere about a resistor that is needed for a 2 coil set-up. Does anyone have a value on that resistor. Also where do I check to verify the negative side of the front coil?

Thanks,
cruzrjo
