DC, I think it's the owner's manual. It was giving to be by the PO. But the first few pages and the last few pages are missing. So I can't tell if it's an owner's manual or a service manual.
But the manual does break down every component on the bike. Might be a service manual the more I think about it. It tells you how to disassemble and reassemble the entire bike. It's in a white binder like a 3 ring note book, but it's glued to the spine.
Hope that helps.

I feel your pain Troll. As every part was coming off my heart and wallet where both getting sore thinking about, "What if it's something inside the transmission?". Should only cost me about $125 bucks with shipping and that includes both of the gaskets that tore when we pulled both side covers off searching for the problem. Still gonna miss my ride with my club this weekend but at least I should be on two wheels next weekend.

Better than my luck...I had $800 in internal parts and 15 hrs labor......

Well after tearing almost the whole bike apart to get the Front Gear Case off, we got inside of my baby and found our problem. The External Shift Mechanism was messed up. You can't really tell from the picture but the Shift Mechanism Arm or Pavel as the parts diagram calls it is slightly warped and one of the tips is broken or worn off. When we try to shift gears with it installed it wouldn't go past first. Once we removed it you could shift thru all the gears by hand.
So once the Insurance Adjuster comes by tomorrow and looks at everything. I'm going to order the new parts and hopefully sometime next week I'll be back on the road.
I'm just going to replace every part on the External Shift Mechanism, figure no need in having old parts with new.

Yea, gonna be here by Friday. My insurance is thru USAA. They are really good at taking care of you. Guess it's military thing, I do know they saved me over $1200 a year on all 5 of my vehicles so I'm not complaining.

Troll

Did you call the insurance company yet?

Ok, we checked all the clutch plates out and there working as they should. We just finished tearing down the bike so we can inspect the external shift mechanism. Talk about a lot of work to get the damn cover off.  This is what my Drifter looks like right now. Not to sexy.
Tomorrow well get inside her and see if anythings broken. Hoping it's just a semi easy to access busted spring. and not something deeper inside the tranny.

Thanks for your input Troll.
I'm not sure if it was shifting after the wreck. I was still in the hospital when the adjustor came out and did the claim on the bike. My wife and one of my riding buddy's handled it all. But the adjustor for my insurance, USAA did say to call him back if we did find any hidden damage.
Unfortunately, the bike set in my buddy's shop for several months with just the minor work being done, due to the fact there was no need to rush because I was unable to ride. Being a backyard mechanic I forked out the dough to have a real motorcycle mechanic come out and figure out this problem. We are in the process of taking the transmission cover off right now to inspect the internal gears and springs. With a call to the adjustor if something is broken and not just out of place.
But having the insight from the people on this site helps make the job easier. It's always nice to have a feel for what you should be looking for.

After the bike was crashed, did the trans shift ok, or did no one check that? Crash damage is usually more than just cosmetic. The positive neutral finder is a blessing, but it does have a drawback. The bike will not shift past 1st. gear if it's not moving. If the clutch disengages enough to get 1st. gear, then a short ride seems in order. If the trans. won't shift, it might be time to inform your insurance company. I bought mine with a broken transmission, and it's a very expensive proposition to fix. Cases must be split.....In the insurance game, they call this hidden damage...just hope you didn't sign off on a settlement. Good luck, you might need it.

Man, talk about bad luck! You should be able to work the bike up to 5th gear just by rocking it back and forth with the engine shut off, and without using the clutch. If it shifts from neutral to first okay, and back to neutral, but not up to second, it sounds internal. That being said, I have never been inside one of these bikes so I expect there are others on here (like Troll for instance) who could help you out.

Good luck with it, and keep us poster.

Thanks for the reply John.

Gonna rebled it in about 2 hours. I Just changed the oil two days before I wrecked. Do you thing the oil would go bad with only 100 or so miles on it even though it set for 5 months? I used Royal Purple.

First things first, are you sure the clutch has been bled properly..sometimes you can get air trapped in the top banjo nut at the master cylinder and you have to crack the nut and bleed it.

if the hydrolics are all good the next thing is the plates can stick together if the bike has not been used for five months..

an oil change is the next thing to do.

John.

Hello All.
Been a long time since I have posted. The last year has been a whooper. Had surgery on my left elbow(work injury). Then the day after I was released to go back to work I was cut off by a cager and wrecked my Drifter. Thank God that the handle bars and the hwybar absorbed all the damage. I broke my right shoulder which I'll be having shoulder replacement surgery sometime at the end of May. I have to wait until I'm off my blood thinners from my second Heart surgery in three years, that I had in Febuaray.
As you can see I have had a great fun adventure the last twelve months.

But now to the reason I'm posting. My doctor who also rides has released me to ride until my shoulder surgery in May. As I was finishing up the last few repairs to my bike, I had no clutch pressure. After 3 days of bleeding the line my wonderful wife found the small leak around the tit on the clutch switch. So I ordered a new Clutch Master Cylinder. I replaced it tonight and bleed the line until I had fresh Dot 4 fluid and no air.
The bike starts up and runs strong. But, I only have Neutral and 1st gear. The clutch will not go into 2nd no matter what. even pushed her out into the alley and tried to do it while I was moving but no luck. I read a post about the plates sticking, and since my bike hasn't been ran since September 30th I ran the bike for about 20-30 minutes but still no second gear. Tried rocking it back and forth, with the same results.
Not sure what I need to check next. Any suggestions for you guys would be greatly appreciated.

My Drifter is a 2001 1500.

Thanks
Allan
