There are still widespread power outages around here. Fortunately, we didn't lose power in my neighborhood. I went to go to some stores the other day and both Wally World and the food market were dark. There were police guarding WW in the night to prevent looting. Then yesterday I went to Home Depot. They have emergency power providing some lighting, but it's still dark inside. They had armed security people in S.W.A.T. team uniforms roaming the aisles. Same thing in the food market.

Driving has been a problem in some areas, as many traffic lights aren't working and people don't know how to handle that at the intersections. So that creates jams and angry people. . .. and I'm sure, some accidents. Some roads are still closed, mostly due to many fallen trees, rather than flooding.

The fire sirens have been going off regularly in the night, as people light their houses with candles and start fires.

As I was driving around I noticed there was, on average, once house on each block that had a generator. Many from the block were gathering there to charge phones and watch TV outside. People were generally good natured and were making the best of it, trying to turn it into a combination picnic/block party. No doubt many neighbors either reconnected or got to know one another for the first time.

Back at the resort area where I evacuated my mother from, the Army Corp of Engineers has heavy equipment out removing several feet of sand from the main North/South road. In talking to others down there, at the highest point, the water covered the lawns on her street with a few inches of whatever washed in from the beach. She's about 4 miles inland. The waters have since receded, but I'm sure there will be that lingering fishy smell hanging on for a while. I'll bring her back to her place this weekend, as the work on the N/S highway should be completed.

Yeh, it took me years to clear out the back and get it the way I wanted. Oh well, a new canvas means a new backyard project.

WOW seen that once here during a freak storm, can not remember some of the trees in my back yard bending over so much as then and last night......gald you made it ok.

My wife and I were JUST out there, on a D.C. bus tour...we left Arlington on the 19th....I've been watching FOX, and they are talking about the places we just toured...scary! As far as the damage on L.I. and in New York, I know the area quite well, being originally from Queens, and then moving to Commack in '57. I still have a couple of cousins living there, so I've been trying to get in touch, but so far, no luck.

Thanks for the sentiments guys. We all made it fine. However, my backyard really got hammered and I lost a lot of trees. I'm just grateful that none of them decided to become airborne and try to get in the house for cover.

Latest CNN update, 26 dead; things are NOT looking good on the east coast. Prayers needed, all you of the praying kind.

Yeah, we've got 50-55mph winds for about the last 18 hours. Got some rain too. I'm near Indianapolis, Indiana, so we're WAY inland.

I've been through a couple... it would be a sleepless night for me. I think the storm came ashore a little while ago. Fox is 24/7 on this... while important I wish they'd do other stuff too... but they live in NYC so...

My mother lives in a resort community in Delaware. I went and got her and her cat yesterday and brought them to my place (farther inland, but still in the hurricane's path) where she'll be safe. I think it's been downgraded to tropical storm. We're getting the brunt of the winds right now. Gusts up to 70-80. Feels like the doors are going to be ripped off the hinges. The wind is so strong, it'c compressing the weather stripping aound the doors and I'm hearing all this hissing where it's forcing it's way in.. . . Power has glitched off and back on a few times. Most likely, power will go completely out overnight.

I'm an ex-New Orleans resident and have been through several hurricanes. All my prayers go out to all you folks on the East coast. I pray this will no where near as bad as what they've predicted.

Don't be stupid... LEAVE if you've been instructed to do so. A few hours or a couple of days is a small sacrifice.
