I was having a similar problem, pinging in top gear or under a load while accellerating on my '99 1500.

i put 1 oz of sea foam per gallon of gas in the tank, for 2  tanks back to back,
it has greatly improved the problem.

I have not fogged my engine yet, just a little afraid after seeing some of the videos online.
Nor have i put any in my crankcase yet.

My friend has a similar problem on his '00 800 vulcan classic, but he has not taken the plunge, he is researching sea foam some more.

I do think we will be having a sea foam fogging party one day.
when he comes around.

Bottom line... I believe it works.

Sea-foam motor treatment.  I think the "motor tune" product is the same stuff.

They also make a transmission treatment which is great, too (automatic trans in cars).

This particular product is used to help stabilize fuel, reduce carbon etc...

Here's some info and a place to order (through us, we get a buck or two which helps keep the lights on).

What is this mystery sea-foam you speak of? lol

If it were mine, I would run some sea-foam through it.  I haven't used it in a bike, but I don't see how it would hurt anything.  There are perhaps better treatments available, I don't know for sure, but  I've had a lot of success on small engines with it, though - chainsaws, mowers, atv's, I use it for all my small engines, and for customers as well.  Come to think of it, I think I'll dump some in my 800 as a preventative.   Does anyone out there use or (have used) seafoam in their bike???

Just as you indicate, carbon, compression (too high), cheap gas and engine overheating are all potential reasons.

 >:(

Recently my 1999 Drifter has begun to'ping' but only 2 up and only when I roll on in top gear on the highway.
Anyone else had this problem or know a cure. I guess lean running and carbon deposits are the obvious cause.
