Look in the mods and tips under reference/maintenance. There is SOME information. I am working with a company to get digital copies of service manuals to stock. Right now you can buy a service manual on amazon, ebay or from Kawasaki. The owner's manuals are available for download here.

Hi guys, and thanks for the replies.

a couple of things ? -- um, is there a section on the board here with any type of service or maintenance manuals? May be  wiring diagram, stuff like that?

Back to the fuel cap, I have ordered one from the Kaw dealer in town, its going to take a few days, but it ought to be right. I had wanted to find a cam lock aftermarket cap and iv'e the coolest indian head penny thing thats about 3" in diameter that I wanted to attach -- affix -- (can't weld as its pot metal), anyway onto the cap ----- BUT --- the neck measurement I get is right under 1 5/8" and I cannot find an aftermarket camlock vented cap in that size. Nor can I find, on the net, a manufacturer -- (Gates, Stant, Motorad) product catalog that does a listing by size, only by application. Grrrrr.
I know I know, just stay with the "right" stuff. However, I get as much pleasure dinkin' around in my shop building stuff as I do riding anywhere.

Could, would, someone take a set of calipers and just for sh#ts & giggles measure the Id of the tank neck on their bike and post it up here for me? I still have an old friend -- we don't talk very often, I can call him with this -- who has been in the auto-parts business for the 20 years that I've known him and I will, just been busy with a lot of things besides this stuff. He MIGHT be able to help me find an aftermarket/vented/cam-lock cap by size rather than by application -- later! (I REALLY want to do this  Indian Head penny thing)

Be sure to install the 'O'rings when you install the proper cap assembly; when I got my '02, it would leak fuel if you filled up past 3/4 of a tank; one 'O'ring was missing. Not sure why, might have been that way from the dealer, but I doubt it.

The 99 and 00 model 1500 Drifters use P/N 51049-1132 - this cap is listed as active and is only used on the 99/00 Drifter and 2002-2004 1500 Classic. All other models of Drifter use pn 51049-0003... which is used by most other Vulcan models including the new 1700's etc.

Now whether or not the latter will work on the 99 I can't tell you. There may just be simple cosmetic differences...
Personally, I'd order this online (or check with the dealer) and get it resolved... this is pretty important to your safety and the correct running of the bike.

Seems to me that the cap is the same for all 1500 vulcans. funny it should have gotten "lost" since it's bolted to the tank. I did a quick check on bikebandit, and they list the same cap for all the vn1500's in '99 Next stop, eBay!

his listing says it fits just about anything but a snow mobile!

First of all, I apologize as I'm more than likely in the wrong area, or, this information already is on the board somewhere and I don't know how to find it!

My name is Skip and I'm basically in the Portland Ore. metro area. I just bought a '99 1500 that shows right at 14500 miles on it. Seems to run, shift and brake o-k. I don't know much regarding these, especially the FI, but have long been hooked on the look of the drifter.

So -- right outta the box, this motorcycle came without the correct fuel cap on it. (somebody had found a cap that was close then wrapped it in tape and jamed in, sittin' pretty loose) (now, I have no idea what may or may not have happened to the correct one. The guy I got it from bought that way so he said, and I want to believe him. It plain doesn't matter at this point)
I measured it and installed a rubber expansion plug in it, but, it seemed to build pressure in there and while I am kinda redneck hillbilly, I have a healthy respect (fear?) for gasoline and pressurized containers!
And of course I COULD go to the kow dealer and order one -- the better part of a Franklin -- but as with most everybody else $$$ are a consideration. Is/are  there interchange parts, other models of Kawasaki's that could fit? Same question on exhaust -- (though not neer as important to me: I want my fuel tank capped securely!)

I will get more familure with the different areas of the board, but mainly wanted to be able to shop for a fuel tank cap, maybe from whatever model at the various online motorcycle wrecking yards.

Thats enough for today

Thanks in advance for the info --- Skip
