Thanks Joe,  I'll try it when the sun comes up.

Just for sheets and giggles..................
You left the key on.....
With the key on and the motor not running the oil and temp light should be on.............. til you fire it up.
The both work off ground, no oil PSI, the spring in the swith is stonger than the nothing pushing back, (the oil PSI should unseat the spring when the motor is running, turning off the light).
The temp is a wax element (I think), when it gets hot, melts, poof light is on, (or something like that)
I'd try removing the wire to the oil PSI, see if the light goes out.
If it does.......
Take a multi meter test to see if the switch is grounded. (one end to the sending unit, the other to a GOOD ground on the motor)
Start the bike, test the sending unit again. If it had continuty when it was off and stll has it, chances are the sending unit is bad, (you can buy a cheap auto oil PSI gauge and screw it into the engine to make sure you have oil PSI. On my Harley I have a "T" and both a gauge at the engine and the light at the dash). Or do it the "Harry the Butcher" way, pull the sendig unit and fire it up for a second!
Just to make sure you DO have oil PSI.
I'd bet both sending units are bad.
I've tested temp units by putting them in hot water with the multi meter hooked to it. As the water temp went up the continuity should change.
Try the easiest first

I did a google search for a vn800 wiring diagram, and I have .pdf , which is what you need to start figuring out what happened. Send me your email address and I will send it to you.....my email is troll@charter.net

I wish I had a wiring diagram set for an 800... I have a 1500 and a factory manual that is quite useful, but not for you, since it's probably not set up the same way. My only thoughts at this time are 1 did you disconnect the battery when you charged it, and 2, did you disconnect the battery charger before you started it up..3..are you sure all the wire connections are tight?

You are right of course.  But my two red lights, oil and temp, are on.  I need to make them go away.http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif

The two red lights are oil, on the left, and temp on the right. There is no light for the charging system. The small lights in the speedo are for neutral  and High beam. the green one in the middle is for the turn signals.

I recently acquired an 800 Drifter.  Even more recently I left the key on and drained the battery completely.  Charged the battery and started the bike.   After a minute or two the alternator and oil light came on at the same time.  I turned the bike off.  The next day I started the bike again and the indicator lights are still on.  I have a tough time believing I've lost oil pressure and charging at the same time.  Is there a reset I need to deal with?  Fuse to check?  Any ideas?  Anyone?
