chief yes it is in blater space   I don't know if it would or not but I Feel good about it better thin the not I had in my stomach  an no oil   .  varoom GOOD thought

Oil has a couple of functions besides lubricating.  One of them is that it takes heat away from the engine and transfers some of it to ambient via the filter.  You might consider armoring your filters with a half tube of hardware cloth, held on with a cable tie to allow the air rushing by to continue to do its job of stripping the heat off.  Just a thought.
I recall losing oil pressure on an old pickup once when the oil pump drive shaft snapped and the hydraulic lifters let you know that you've got a problem right away.  No damage done even though my x wife drove it home 3 miles after the pump seized!

BR28 - looks like you have the bag strapped under the bike... is that correct?  Wouldn't that cause any rock etc to ricochet back into the filter?

Cheers.

There is a tab with a hole in it on the frame, right by the oil filter. I was thinking about moding up a small skid plate. That should stop 3 in a million from happening!

I have a chrome tool box where the rectifier was... never thought about "armoring" the filter!

still use maws parts but put some leather on her liver and a tool bag in place of blater (bag has filter and wrench)  easy fix two strips leather (1) 2.5 in x 4 (2)2.5 x 8 put 1 in 2 center rap around filter  double layer on bottom hose clamp a round all ride safer

No sure many filters would hold up any better.

While the fram may feel firmer, I've been told its innards aren't nearly as good as some others.

I use K&N filters... the same one works on the drifter and the gw.

Here's a listing of filters which may work for you.

Was it a kawasaki filter?  Nothing like having oil dripping on to your rear tire at 70 mph.

two in a million small hole in oil filter kicked something up off the road  never posted thought it was a freak thing BUT NOW WE KNOW WEEK LINK i put tool bag in blater space  think about it running 70 mph OIL LIGHT COMES ON  in fast lain just passed  two trucks  and aline of cars behind you 3/4 mi to get to side of road

I was riding with 9 other bikes I think a stone was thrown from the bike in front of me. I even have mud flaps so a stone from my front tire would have trouble getting under the bike. Don't have the filter toss it out. The dent was nickel size about 1/2 inch deep. The filter was kawasaki I replaced it with a fram the case on the fram felt thicker ( less give).

Yeah, that was my thinking... its really hard for something to get to the filter... not impossible but it would have to come up off the road and the tire would have to hit it first I would think.

While there was a recall on oil filters (2003/2004) - it didn't impact the 2002 model and the problem was manifested at the time of start-up - not while riding with warmed up engine.

Very interesting.

I run on brights now. Don't want to ever do it again.

I went between two raccoons at about 60mph They might have been 4 inches apart and running across the road. Don't know how I didn't hit them.
Scared the crap out of me, upgraded the headlights the next day.

My wife and I Went riding on Sunday with a small group ( 9 bikes). Heard what sounded like a large bug hitting the windshield but no bug looked in the mirrors to see if I ran over anything nothing. When we stopped  I smelled oil burning looked, had no leaks thought it was one of the other bikes. Kept smelling oil burning on and off through the rest of the day but no oil on the ground when we stopped.  When I got home check the oil level I was a qt low, but no oil on the ground even after the bike sat 1 hour. Top off the oil started her up
and let her sit running, slowly a small pool of oil started to form. What ever I hit that made the noise  had put a pin hole in the oil filter. I'm  counting my blessings It could have been much worse. I needed to change the oil anyway. Wanted to know if anyone was had this happen or it was just one in a million and not to worry about it.
