thanks I'LL check them in the morning

A couple of things to check for a rich running 1500...

First, check the plugs... they will tell you if you are actually running rich - black sooty exhaust isn't the best indicator on v-twins.

Make sure the plugs and wires are good and properly installed. I know of at least one case where properly installing an improperly installed plug fixed the richness problem.

Also, believe it or not, a weak battery can impact the operation of the ECU.

800's are carb'd so instead of a PC, you'd rejet. And, I think you pretty much have to do it if you make any changes to intake or exhaust.

Cheers.

So let me get this right, You have a hypercharger, power commander and a digital fuel processor on your bike right? The reason I'm asking is info I found said the digital fuel processor can only make your bike run richer, not leaner which is what I need done. I could really use some good news. Took mine out yesterday couldn't even ride it a half mile ran sooo bad. :'(

annieoakley

I was hoping to get it home this weekend but  :'( Hopefully by Tuesday. It's only gonna be in the 40's here this week but I'm ridin! I'm going through withdrawal real bad. 30 days without firing him up is not good for me! And I will definitely keep you posted on how it's going. I plan on running a tank of gas through it by the weekend to check my mileage difference.  ;D

1SG CAV

So AnneOakley did you get your Drifter out of the shop? Did the new processor fix the problem? Weather is decent here plan on riding my locomotive (black smoke from the exhaust) today. Let me know how that fuel processor works ,maybe I''ll fork out $200 for one. Maybe then I'll get better than 30 mpg ;D

I have found the 800's do not benefit from pc's of any type , or hyper chargers. What was done to Viola was about the most straight forward and $$ sensible approach to a better running bike for the 800's any way.  A mild cam , remove the inner exhaust from the stock system and add a jet kit stage one and a K&N air filter. I get about 45 to 48 running 70. Plenty of power for one up and she tore up the mountains  on a 400 mile day trip recently. Idles a little rough but I have no flat spots and she warms up quick.

99% of the time simply changing pipes won't require a fuel module. But, not all pipes are the same and some do require the upgrade... mine did, but I'm the exception - as usual~

If you do the breather AND the pipes one is always required.

yeah I'm tossing ideas, so maybe Anneoakley and I can fine out why our drifters run too rich. I even disconnected my power commander. Still didn't help.

pcarrell

Thats true most of the time, but the Drifter exhaust is so restrictive that when an aftermaarket exhaust is added, most of the time a processor isn't needed.  I run V&H longshots without a prosessor.

1SG CAV

Does your bike have a Digital fuel processor? I was reading an article and it said that fuel injected bikes that change out the exhaust need some form of fuel processor since you can't tune fuel injection.

annieoakley

I stopped into the shop. The bike is up on the lift so I should hear something soon. $950?????? I hope thats not the news I get :o I know it's going to be over $200 just in the hourly rate alone. (sigh....) I should know something by tomorrow.

pcarrell

Just tell your dealers it's a Classic/Nomad with better looks!  (Wonder why they thought it was a Harley with what clearly look like Indian fenders?)

1SG CAV

I look forward to hearing from you. My dealers Here( I have two) have never seen a Drifter. They both thought it was a HD. I told them I wouldn't own a HD, even if it was given to me. I had the throttle body change $$$$$950.00. Plugged off the smog system. I'm sorry I'm not the only one who is having this problem.  :'(

Bike is in the shop! I will be checking on him today to see what's up! ??? I too was frustrated. I bought my drifter in West Virginia and rode it all the way home to Indiana. Didn't start having problems until I was about 5 or 6 hours from home. it started out very sporatically but by the time I reached my hometown my fuel injector light was on. I thought maybe I had gotten ahold of a bad tank of gas because it was running really rough by the time I pulled into the garage. Thankfully we have a kawasaki dealer a few blocks from my home so I drove it there and the mechanic changed out the black plugs and adjusted my power commander. It worked for a while but then after another 3000 miles it started acting up again, only worse. I will be checking on my bike today and will post back later.

Anneoakley
I heard you maybe having the same problem as I am. I have a power commander unit installed on my bike. I also have the hyper-charger  and hardchrome headers. I have not been able to lean out my bike. It runs rich. I have done everything I can think of.  Zero out the power commander, to disconnecting the thing.I hooked the power commander back up. ran crappy without it.got any advice?

This proves that Drifters are head turners and show winners off the show room floor. I have my bikes to ride. Congratulations

1SG CAV

I too love the looks of your ride. Like pcarrell, I too am partial to black and chrome.

pcarrell

That is a great lookin' scoot, but then I'm partial to the black & chrome look!

7 shows and 7 trophies is quite an accomplishment!

annieoakley

Just finished up my last bike show. What a great summer! No matter where I go this bike draws a crowd. I love my Drifter!
