rockinghorse, the little lurch is normal.  It lets you know you've hit the gear.  You can lessen it a litttle by squeezing and releasing the clutch lever a few times before you grab the gear.

pohlease, a couple of things, try changing the fluid out and bleeding the system real good.http://www.gadgetjq.com/hydraulic_bleed.htm  Also, check this out: http://www.VulcanDrifterRiders.com/reviewpost/showproduct.php/product/464/cat/67

Actually, on my bike, the "sticky" plates are such that I've been able to propel the bike in 1st gear the entire length of my driveway before the plates break free. It seems like the colder it is outside, the more prevalent the problem is.
A couple years ago, I had a "Gorilla Clutch" installed the same time I had the Nomad Alternator/rectifiers done.
I'll live with it, with a spare starter on the shelf.

I had this on my 250 ninja and it was because the former owner used automotive motor oil causing the clutch plates to stick together overnight so the first shift stalls the bike and from then on it's fine.  Changed the oil twice over 5000 miles and it's fine now.

Thanks for the tip. An oil changed helped a little... I am thinking of doing one more oil change just to get as much out as possible. Also i think the clutch on my 2000 800 is a cable? guess i haven't looked closer at it. Was thinking of getting a cable oiler and getting that greased up well.

The clutch on my drifter is great but I've noticed right before it completely releases the bike has a small surge of movement. Like the clutch is releasing too abrutly. Any tips? does something need to be replaced?

When I put mine in gear from neutral, it "jumps" a bit, especially when the engine/oil is still cold or less than operating temperature.
When it's fully warmed up, not so much...
