Speedometer stopped working............

The speedo itself is not working. The odometer is accruing miles, so it's getting a signal from the VSS, the turn signals are canceling, so that is getting a signal from the VSS, so all that's left is that the gauge itself is not working. The pics from the manual  show the connections, both inside and outside the housing. Disassemble the speedo head and check all internal wiring harness connections

Sounds like a problem inside the gauge assy, itself. Could be as simple as a bad solder joint on the circuit board. You may need to replace the speedo head. They show up on eBay now and then...the black face ones for the Vulcans will fit just fine, just not the same color.

So, if its clicking off the miles (Odometer is working) but the speedometer is not working, it's not the speed sensor that needs to be replaced? I guess part of the speed sensor is working?

The plug from the sensor to the wiring harness needs to be cleaned. Cleaning off the MAGNETIC sensor is a waste of time. Cleaning the connections on the back of the speedo head would be the next thing to try. IF the turn signals cancel after 15 blinks, then the sensor is working, sending VSS signals to the turn signal controller. Is the odometer registering mileage? Could be the air core gauge itself. Sorry to put it this way, but this is a simple circuit....not rocket science.

Troll, thanks for pulling up the picks from the manual..

Yes, the odometer is registering mileage..... And the light is working....Clock too..

I have not cleaned the connection from the magnet to where it plugs in.. I guess do that first? With the odometer working, what could it be? Still the connection?

I had a speed sensor on another brand of motorcycle that just needed cleaning. Try pulling the sensor, clean and replace.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I already took it out and cleaned it and put it back in. It was very clean, just clean gear oil in it...

Start by checking and cleaning all connections in the circuit

I finally got my 2001 Drifter 1500 up and running after many years of sitting in my garage, I know, stupid for not ridding it....

Now my speedo will not work. Everything else works but that. The speed sensor part 21176-0037 is around $100 and I want to make sure that its the speed sensor and not something else. What else could be the problem? Any fuse for the speedo? I know that I can test the sensor, but don't have that tool.

Thanks.....
