Ok with Oct nearing an end and Nov around the corner time to start to think of my winter project list. PC just for your info, today my shipment of seal oil came in so I have lights for the winter and some oil to heat the igloo with.
So my projects are mostly cosmetic this year, as I did all the rebuilding last year. Also all the parts I picked up from WoodCarver, I kept some for myself for a couple of projects the rest will be sold over the winter. So my projects for this winter will be:
1. Extra horn, DONE.
2. Signal light grills, DONE.
3. Risers, do I need them or will I like them.
4. Front Hub Cover, it is on its way from the UK.
5. Wind Screen lowers, need brackets.
6. Rear Signal lights turned into signal/Marker lights, got the parts.
7. Serrated heat shields, part of the parts I got from WoodCarver.
8. Grampasize Carb, because GB told me to do it.
once I am done looking and planning all the parts out I'll be listing them.
I thought you used whale oil? Pound for pound it's a better deal, and you can get a whole winter out of 1 whale, verses 50 seals.

Or the last way I thought of to mount them was to find some "U" bolts that were slightly bigger diameter then the fork tubes, polish them up (or paint them black for you), slip some clear plastic tubing over them and get some acorn nuts for the ends. The Lexan would obviously have to be wider at the mounting point and cover the fork tube as the 2 "U" bolts per side would have to have both sides pass through the Lexan.
In the end I'm happy with how mine turned out.

When I bought my bike I thought the very first thing I would do was change the extended risers out for mini aoe Z bar, until I rode the bike a bit. I actually really like them and will probably keep them.
P:C thanks, I keep telling people you are a prince among so few. I prefer seal oil because I can harvest and clean a seal alone and then no need to bother others who also have chores to do. also seal oil burns brighter and a tad slower the whale oil, so you can make it equal out close to the same deal. An nothing as good as flipper pie on a cold winter night in the old igloo.
Those ideas will help with the mounting of the lowers, Once I have the bike inside I can take my time and think it out and make the plans.
After lunch I am going to go for a ride too......
Moose, I will mount the one set and sit on the bike and see how it feels, I'll load "Electra Glide in Blue" into the player and watch it and ride with them and see how the risers fit, then switch CD's and watch something else and sit on the bike and see which set I like better...........
. . . . and don't forget the blinker fluid. That's important!

Yea, don't forget to rotate the tires....
And make sure you check the piston return springs while you have it all apart.
And, personally, I think you should put on cross-drilled brake lines. Then it WOULD be one of a kind Sunbeam Red.... Guaranteed....

I can't believe you have all missed the most obvious thing!
Those summer spark plugs have to go! Even though the engine won't fire for many months, it needs winter spark plugs! In those northern climates, those spark plugs are fired by unicorn power, so rainbow brand spark plugs are called for!
and hockey games to watch and listen to as I tinker in the warmth of the house........I have 4 flipper pies on the go and will send them to GB and PC so they can see what a good meal it is......
and for those who don't know it is a really good dish
Seal Flipper Pie
Soak seal flippers in cold water with 1 tbsp baking soda for approx ½ hour. Utilizing baking soda makes fat on seal meat turn white. Take a sharp knife and remove all traces of fat. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with a paper towel.
Makes 6-8 servings
Ingredients:
2 tbsp pork fat (or vegetable oil)
4 seal flippers (fore-paws of the seal)
1 lg onion (chopped)
2 garlic cloves (minced)
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (or water)
1 celery stick (sm chopped)
2 lg carrots (sm chopped)
1 sm turnip (sm chopped)
1 med parsnips (sm chopped
4 med potatoes (sm chopped)
Salt & pepper
Method
In a skillet, med-high heat, sauté seal (both sides) in pork fat until lightly brown. Season to taste. Remove and set aside.
Lower to med heat, add onion and garlic, continue cooking until onion becomes golden brown (approx 5 minutes). Add flour and continue cooking over high heat until mixture or roux is slightly brown and bubbling (4-5 minutes).
Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Stir until liquid thickens. Season to taste. Return meat to pot and cover, simmer for 45 minutes or until seal flippers are partly tender. Add celery, carrot, turnip, and parsnip. Simmer for 20 minutes. Add potato and cook for another 15 minutes or until all vegetables are tender. Transfer mixture to a deep casserole dish and top with biscuit dough. Bake at 425F for 20-30 minutes or until crust is light golden brown. Let rest 10 minutes prior to serving.

Biscuit Crust for Seal Flipper Pie
Makes 1 crust
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour (sifted)
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¼ cup butter (cold – chop in sm cubes)
¼ cup milk (cold)
Method
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter, until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal or small peas. Add milk and stir just to moisten dough to form a ball. Place dough on a floured surface and knead about 8 times. Roll out dough ¼ inch thick and place over casserole.

I almost forgot. Don't forget to lubricate the tires. You don't need to use oil. Just get a paintbrush and brush on some transmission fluid. Make sure you thoroughly coat the treads. It makes the tires last longer. More lubrication = less tire wear. Works great!
Armour all the seats and tires is just as good and it shines really nice and then use it on the grips too.......

Fried Cod Tongues
Newfoundland Recipes-Cod Tongues1-www.saltjunk.comMakes 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
2 lbs cod tongues
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp garlic
Salt & pepper
4 tbsp pork fat (or vegetable oil)
Method
Rinse cod tongues under cold water and pat dry. In a container (or plastic bag) add flour, garlic and season to taste. Add cod tongues and shake well until evenly coated. In a skillet, med-high heat, fry cod tongues in pork fat until golden brown. Serve with a white sauce and your favourite side dish.
So this is what cabin fever looks like? Must be the early onset kind as we still have a long time before summer.
No cabin fever not even close, this is preplanning, like laying in a winter of fire wood, this is getting a lot of meals ready and into the freezer, all the comfort foods so we can spend more time doing other chores that need doing, so as time allows you get things done, today will be cooking a huge pot of moose stew for the freezer, and while that is happening then get the under lay and the plywood ready for the living room. Rain has stopped and now perhaps we will get some sun and I can wash the bike or do the oil change.
For #6 on your list did you buy the kuryakin light controller kit? My bike had one for 7 years put on by the p.o but she melted last week an i am trying to decide weather or not to buy another
Just a few winter projects for the old '99er:
1) install a power port in the side cover fro battery tender and GPS support. DONE
2) Install pull back risers.
3) Touch up the boo boo when I accidentally bumped into the rear fender with the lawn mower.
4) Touch up the boo boo from the bolt in the bottom of the springer seat that somehow managed to come down and kiss the top of the fender. (Bolt removed)
5) Build a seat rail
6) Build a new back rack for my single seat. (or modify my two-up rack to fit)
Beyond that I discovered I might just have a real money-making opportunity. Since I haven't ridden the bike since early summer I realized that I currently have a tank full of gas. Back then I paid $3.85 a gallon for the gas. Gas is now $2.91. I wonder if can sell the gas in my tank for a profit?

Duckies Fan, no I recently came into a box of 1500 parts, and decided to keep the front signal lights for myself, and put them on the back of my bike and so it is a simple wiring job and easy for me to do.
jmbo let me see what is in that box of parts might be of use to you.
When you remove the taillight assy, you will discover that the rear turn signals have a special 2 wire plug that connects to the harness, and the front ones use 3 bullet connectors......
yes well aware of that, and have it planned out how I am going to wire the third wire into the harness.
Just thought I'd mention it....I don't know about you, but I HATE surprises! :o
Surprises are not fun always, this topic had been talked about at sometime, and I had this idea by just buying a couple of 1157 bulbs and the plug ins from an auto supply store, but then when I came into the parts and the front signal lights were in there I decided this was an easy way to do it, and yes the blots are different lengths so I am going to swap out the parts, then I'll have 2 sets of rear signal lights for sale if anyone needs them......lol......

Best way i have ever found to do that is to get a hot raunchy blonde that hates the cold an keep her warm in bed all winter. Though this only ever actually worked out successfully for me 2 out of 30 winters soo your results may very slightly lol

Ratman, you might want to look at local laws regarding rear running lights colors. Those lights have amber lenses on them, and here in Indiana, and many states as well, it's illegal to have amber running lights on the rear. The quick fix is to swap out the amber lenses for red ones, which are legal. Ebay is your friend on this!

I have those on my bike and I love them. I bought a second throttle boss for the other side as I like symmetry. I've had them for years and they're quite comfortable.

First was the motorcycle crash took out her knee. Then the dune buggy flipped she took out the kc lights with her face then as soon as she was done with physical therapy an was walking riding again boom pregnancy. When I first started thinking of this I decided to check into this question. First off went and looked at a lot of new bikes and noticed that if they had amber signal light lens they had big huge rear tail lights. I could not see any that were the way I was looking so went to the next level, went to the three shops in town that actually do safety checks and inspections prior to plates being issued to a bike, I explained slowly what I was planning on doing and what lens covers are required, ok.
Then I went to the local police station and asked to speak with anyone familiar with motorcycle and traffic issues, well the 2 officers I talked to could not have lit a 1157 bulb on a good day, never got a firm answer.
So then I went to the OPP station, (like your State Troopers).....again asked for someone versed in the laws of motorcycle laws.....he said it was not a real law anyplace. Ok thanks for your time. and left....
So anyway I am going to go with my own thoughts here and replace the amber with red, because the extra red will be more visible, and really good in bad weather. When the signal lights flash it will be even more visible and eye catching then amber.

One of my winter projects is done...I stripped everything off the fenders and used a product called Ice liquid clay bar. I'm pretty amazed with the results. Took off all the years or road grime that just a washing wouldn't touch, and you could feel the finish getting smoother as you worked on it. I also put a rear fender tip on and found a nice silver concho...is this "Indianizing"?

that's a plain one for a Fatboy. Not a perfect fit, but close enough. I have one on the front, as well. That one has been on for years. I bought the pair of them a long time ago and never got around to putting on the rear one....

With my jammed packed work schedule ( out of state ) not to mention this white stuff falling from above and frigid temps , I haven't did a single thing to either bike except put them on life support :( Looks like April will be the first time I get a chance to tinker with the scoots :-[ .

Ratman I only have one add on to add to MA-DEUCE this year . I must say is definitely a "ONE OFF " custom made add on . The only thing is between the military and my daily job I have had no time to spoil my drifters this brutal winter . I actually didn't even store my babies at the house this year due to this reason . If you remember wwwaaayyy back one I took Pastor dude's advice and became very chummy with the local shop . That being said both of my girl's are resting with friends in a nice cozy spot being well taken care of ;) for little to no cost , of course . I'll try to get to the shop in the near future to reveal this secret project , which by the way was done by the hands of one of " our " very crafty member's . Stay tuned for the reveal ::) Can't wait to see all your winter project's as well .
