Title: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: kw-retrorider on November 17, 2012, 04:32:15 AM
Have read all the info in previous posts...all dated around 2010. So, now two years later....looking for more current info on engine guards:

1. K32000-041 no longer available from Kawasaki - If anyone has one used, I am interested.
2. Does the OEM engine guard for the 1500 Drifter fit on the 800 Drifter (this question on previous threads but no answered.....anybody know or tried to fit one?)....lots of 1500 guards around.
3. Anyone have a set from Mo-Tique on their machine that can post photos?
4. Any experience with the guards from MC Enterprises?

I know they are available from Cobra, but would prefer a minimum and not oversized guard. Other options I have found either say: "Doesn't fit Drifter" of simply doesn't say. Prefer OEM guard.

Any assist much appreciated.

I have ordered parts from Mo-Tique, just not the engine guard. I have the sissy bar and the front fender guard. If the engine guard is made as well then not an issue, both mine are well made with really nice welds, ordering was simple payment was simple and shipping to here was fast. Cost is very resonable as is the shipping cost. Ease of installation will be found out soon as the snow is on the ground to do my mods I am after.

Since there was limited response on the topic, would like to share what I came up with for my 2002 800. The links below are to a bike parts place in Belgium. The engine guards are made in the Netherlands. It is a current product available in both black and chrome. Price is about $171 with about $50 from overseas.
I liked the shape because of the vertical side instead of a half circle loop. The profile is just the width of the floorboards. The tube is 35 mm, which about 1.38 inches; so larger than the fire and ice 1.25 inches, but not noticeable as a jumbo beach bar. The quaility is above average and fit precise (which means you put all the bolts in loose and then tighten it up.  See photos.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KAWASAKI-VN800-VN-800-DRIFTER-CRASH-BAR-ENGINE-GUARD-/150966909255?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2326543947

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KAWASAKI-VN-800-DRIFTER-ENGINE-GUARD-BULL-BAR-BLACK-/200865544185?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2ec484f7f9

The only modification required was the horn, which could not be mounted again. The two horn bolts are used by the engine guard. See photos. I thought I was going to bend the horn bracket and then use longer bolts, but instead I drilled the cross piece for two 1/4-20 x 3/4 stainless bolts (more visible than black, but fasteners I had around) with a washer on each side and a nyloc nut on the back side, then used the original horn bracket and horn. There is plenty of slack in the wiring to connect it again.
This is in the price range of things available in the U.S., but comes in black for those with blacked out Drifters. The transaction was smooth and the contact at the other end, Guido Broux was more than accomodating by answering questions and making prompt shipment, well packaged. My only question was: does it fit the Drifter.....it does! I would recommend this "bull bar" as they call it.

Nice! Good write up. i like the look of that "beefy bar". Every time I look at one of you guys' blacked out bike makes me want to buy another Drifter, in the blacked out look.

KW....I myself just received the same product from the same guy....I went through a third party to learn about motorsloop.Wasn't to sure how it was going to pan out,so I didn't want to post to you till the deal was a smooth transaction, but you beat me to it.I've been trying to see what else Broux has available for the 800,.but the web is in Dutch & I can't change the language setting.I've clicked on English with no luck....Do you know wgat else he gas? Aprecciate any help in advance.....

Drift1 - Don't remember how I found these. I think I started with Motif and once on UK ebay, did a search for engine guards or bull bars. Anyway, from the link I gave, you can click on another to his wesite. He seems to specialize in crash bars. On the left side, it said there were only (18) kawasaki parts....all bars and radiators. Like you, I don't speak the language, but, Guido Broux responded to me in english when I had questions before I finalized the purchase. You could try that.

49reo: Thanks for your comments. I too wanted a blacked out Drifter, but couldn't find one in the right condition at the time. When I found my 2002, the black body work made it conducive to further "blackening, so I had a vision, but it took awhile to find the right parts. See photos.

Trying to stick to OEM accessories, I put a black head and tailight on it and just finally put a black light bar, spots and front and rear black turn signals....all from a '99 1500. Now just have to figure out what size the in line fuse is to the spots, then they'll work; but I think I like the overall look as a blackened Drifter equivalent. Even have a set of black handle bars, but will with this for now.

I could not get the black light bar nor the spotlights in black so I had mine powder coated........I have also been repalcing a lot of the chrome acron nuts and button head bolts with black over the past few weeks.

KW,I'M having no luck on the website(foreign language) being able to communicate with someone.Do you have an actual contact # or an email address so I can try that route?I would like to see if he has the rear bars as well being he seems to be the only person with the front bar available for the 800's.Thank you for any help you can provide.

I just tried them on ebay and was a bit turned off, to get them shipped if I did the conversion correctly it is $176.16 for the bars and then then $110.00 for shipping, $286.16 seems to be a bit dear for the product.
I have tried to get to Mo-Tique site but they seem to be under repair or something, but I am sure it was not so dear there and shipping seemed to be a lot less costly. I am going to hold off for now.

RATMAN,I myself have been getting on Mo-Tiques web ever since you gave me that info with no success....that site has been down for weeks....as a matter of fact, never been able to see what that site looked like,my man.

Drift1: If you use the link I gave, it takes you to ebay and the item for sale. If you scroll down, eventually you get to a section labelled "ask a question." When you click on that it will ask you to log into your ebay account (so you need to set that up with password first). Once you do that it will allow you to send email back and forth to the seller within ebay. That is the correspondence I had with Guido Broux....all in English.

Ratman: My total was $228 to my door in Maryland. That is better than $250 plus shipping from the guy in NJ (whose are similarly shaped) and that is for a chrome one. Black powdercoat extra from the NJ seller. Must cost more to ship to Canada. I looked at the engine guards from Motif and did not like the shape - unique I suppose.

For European (no shipping to USA/Canada but you can ask :) ) check http://www.empmotorparts.nl/en/webshop/crashbars-top-line-35-mm
They make the parts themself. For 800 and 1500 Drifters, black and chrome.

I bought the passenger footpeg lowering brackets with them.

KW,thanks for the help and info, much appreciated.

RATMAN,find another place that has the bars....scootworks.com,they have them listed for $180.37......not sure about the shipping cost etc.Honestly I would hold off to see what kind of steal you can mustard up at the show,my man.Wish I could've been able to make that....... :-\

kw-retrorider
thanks for all the info it is great, I want and need a bar in black nothing else will work for my ride.
I did contact the guy in NJ, he left me a phone number to call.
His charge is $270.00, waiting for him to let me know what the shipping charges will be.
Just a side note the guy in NJ has a bunch of negative scores on E Bay, so not a good feeling about that either
Motorsloop, Guido got back to me right quick with all the info and the conversion rate, his product is $171.16 and $92.00 for shipping, total = $263.00
waltervl
I did also look at the link you posted, sent them an email asking about shipping to Canada,
Their cost for the bars was $142.65 plus shipping if they would ship to Canada, so I am waiting for that.

Now I talked to my Brother-in-law he said last year at the bike show in Toronto there was a hall of people selling parts and "stuff" so I am going to hit that hall and take my time to look for any 800 parts I can find. even if I find one at the right price I'll pay to have it powder coated if the price will work out right. Once I find out I'll let people know....

Drifter 1 I'll look for parts for your military look too, and what price range are you comfortable for me to spend, like in the 6 figures?...ok I'll spend your money.

RATMAN.....little info for ya.The guy in NJ,is his name Fritzsimmons? If so he gets his crash bars from motorsloop(Guido Broux) so not only are the bars similiar....they are exactly the same,my man. That being said if your going to order them,go right to the source.
How did you get Guido?I've tried with no success.Looking for a set of the rear bars, but don't want to spend the 6 figures in one spot...know what I mean.Looking to get a 1500 model to dress up like a doll.....maybe next year

Now Chilli those would make Drifter1's ride look really military and old school, in my mind.

Yes Drifter1 that is the dude's name, not sure were he buy's his parts and don't really care, but any money I save is better in my pocket then in his.
Guido Broux answered my email with in like 2 hours of sending it. I went to this site
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAWASAKI-VN-800-DRIFTER-ENGINE-GUARD-BULL-BAR-BLACK-/200865544185?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Found the place were it said contact sender and did so through an eBay acount and we sent emails back and forth, I am sure if I do not find anything at the bike show I will order from him once I get back and then have them before spring riding starts.

Ratman: Nice bit of research. This is what I thought I'd get when I first asked. So everyone needed a little push. It's all good.

There's only so much product around and when you look close, it comes down to what you want to spend, what you want it to look like and if it fits without having to re-engineer it. You also have to have patience looking for Drifter parts and not grab the first thing you see.

I can only say, the proof is in the pudding and I provided the pics. I would have liked a set of Fire and Steel's, just because they were OEM, but Guido's bars have a vertical side, more in keeping with some old pics I have of the real thing on old Indians....and I could get black.

The important thing here is now we've had the right dialog on engine guards and its on record. Decent ones that look right ARE out there and there are choices. Now we've all contributed to the greater good...Thanks guys...let's ride.

not sure were he buy's his parts.RATMAN they come from Guido.

This is what I thought I'd get when I first asked. So everyone needed a little push. It's all good.
KW,maybe I'm taking this the wrong way my man..if so let me apologize in advance, but by no means were you being ignored,if that's what your suggesting, when you posted this. The fact of the matter is,as your well aware of,Drifter parts and accessories are like finding a needle in a hay stack,at times. It's like being at a crowded bar with only one urinal and everyone has to piss at the same time.I believe it's coincedence, that these bars are available again and everyone standing in line to get ,em.Myself, I'm in search for a solo seat rail for months now that just arent available.....when they are found they too will be hovered upon like bee's on honey,my man. Please don't take it personal,Drifter riders are always here to lend a hand, just need the avenues to give the correct direction, that's all.
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again

Drift1: No knock on you guys and no apologies necessary. Didn't mean to come off the wrong way. My bad. Just thought or expected the engine guard question was an easy "asked and answered"...but your point is well taken....with Drifter parts, perhaps not so.

Normally, when you see what you like on someone else's machine, then you know what you're getting (if you can get it). Buying on line is problematic; there is not always enough in the way of photos or information to decide if it really looks right or is in the right condition...and as for finding one on someone else's machine...as we know, Drifter sightings are rare. I've had mine a little over a year and haven't seen another.

So for those in doubt....one more photo with the view I like best and the one you'll be looking at once they are installed. (Pay no attention to that man in the mirrors!).

Last comment on these for you Drift1: Because the tube is not continuous across the top, they come with plastic end caps. Suggest you dry fit and trim to account for the flat plate weld on the top at 12 o'clock, then install with a little silicone adhesive. I lost one on the first ride after installation. They are metric, so  am still looking for a replacement.

KW,thanks for that tip on the plastic inserts.....you know I was kinda of thinking going that route with the adhesive, but that's a definate now. That stinks you already lost one, hopefully It's not a nightmare trying to find a replacement,my man.I know how frustrating it can be for all of us,trying to find "what we think is simple" like I said,I've been looking for that seat rail for a while now.....If you ever decide to get the rear dresser bars KW on the accesories section here TED STRUBLE has them and some other things available...Good luck and ride safe, brother

ok got my 2 cents to add here, gentleman........nothing at the bike show to be found for a Drifter.
Got home tired and sore, me poor knees from all that walking on the cement floors....
anyway got an email from Mr. Fitzsimmions...not sure , don't care were he buys his product, but the man is out to lunch. Really out to lunch.
Let us check this out, now Drifter1 I am not doubting your info on that Fitz buys from Guido. So go on that premise.......

Guido, bars = $171.00 + shipping $92.00 = $263.00

Fitz, bars = $270.00 + shipping $98.00 = $368.00

a diffrence of $105.00   so were should I purchase the engine guard bars from?

Ok so got an email from Rich (Drifter1) today he had ordered his engine guard from this Fitz 1932 on ebay and when he got them they were originally from motorsloop in Belgium.
Also I factored in the feed back from both places,
Fitz was at 93.8 % positive
Guido was at 99.1% positive
So once I decide I want them I am going to order from Guido and then just about 5 mins ago I got this from Guido....
QuoteDear cdnratman,

hello,
yes, it's about $ 263 CDN, ( I have look on Paypal for the rate of exchange )
greetings
Guido

so to decide if I want them or not......thanks everyone....

RATMAN,take a look at scootworks as well $180.37
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: CDNRatMan on January 06, 2013, 18:17:02 PM
Rich you have mentioned Sooterworks twice and I finally found their site, was hard kept getting taken to a scooter place...

Ok they have one set of engine guards and they are chrome, I could not find black ones. So for $180.00 I get chrome ones. I did check and it would be about $100.00 for powder coating, so I wanted to check for shipping charges and this is the response.

For shipping outside of the continental U.S.A. the shipping cost will be calculated after submittal of your order, and an email sent to you with the associated shipping costs. We will then wait to receive your approval of shipping costs before shipment will be made. The purchaser will be responsible for all other charges, including any applicable customs, Value Added Tax (VAT), or other surcharges that may deal with importing these products into your country.

So I will be spending $280.00 and not even have it shipped yet. Where motorsloop will ship to me in black at the cost of $263.00
so still ahead with Guido.

Thanks, how much is Scooterworks paying you....lol......

WOW....that's insane,RATMAN.Then the shipping cost on top of that!Would have never thought,my man.I'll keep an eye out for ya.I seen the price of $180 and wanted to kick myself, but maybe I didn't do as bad as I could have,ah.Guido is definately your best bet so far.I just saw them posted from him on ebay...believe they were $173......

Scootworks has some great stuff, even though this deal didn't work out.  I know that their Phatrisers 2 are about the best risers you can get for our bikes without longer cables.

ok at today's exchange rate, 169.00GBP = $270.00 including shipping, which still beats Fitz price of $270.00 adn need to add shipping yet, so KW I went and ordered the bars, now I don't know were you live but I'll find you...if they are not easy to install.... :) ;)and peanut gallery comments are not needed Chilli/PC/45/Drifter1. See I know who the trouble makers are....
Seriously so far it has been really easy dealing with motorsloop and Guido, other then the one email in Flemish, and my Flemish translation ablity sucks to be honest. So now waiting for that and I am working a part time job this weekend to pay for my tires ....so there....

Look Ratman.....the guy in NJ has been listing Guido's bars on ebay ever since I've been looking....over a year..of course didn't know they were Guido's. Guido is in Belgium, getting them from a manufacturer in the Netherlands. I'm just happy to have found something I liked, that turned out to be what I expected when it came and looks the way I wanted it to on the machine.

As for installation....my photos are "untouched"...so as Drift1 would say....you are on your own "my man."

Didn't care for the scootworks bars - mount differently and around the radiator and again, only chrome. You should be fine. If not, I'm sure we'll hear about it. Good luck.

I am working a part time job this weekend to pay for my tires ....

Should we dare to even ask?If it's anything to do with shoveling snow, you might want to get paid up front...and this might just cover the bail money. ;D..Your right in one sense though,if I can install them anyone can....I'm by far any type of motrcycle mechanic, that's for sure.Remember to take KW's advice though and use adhesive on the plugs near the horn  mount.Hey KW maybe we should call up our buddy Guido, and have him powder coat RATMANS bars "YELLOW"  ::) to match his new fender ornament I sent him....... :o :D ;)

Was yours opened? I don't think mine was open at all. Box was in really good shape. Yes that was so nice of Guido to send along a foot mnassager, and she will be here on Monday evening for a reflexology session. I am going to pick up some black silicone to hold the plugs in place. I am also going to drill 2 holes in the top bracket to remount the horn so it will be as close to stock as I can make it or leave it. Both ideas from KW, and kw seeing as I live in a metric country, I'll go around this weekend and see if I can find a plug for you. Thanks for the info and letting me know that htis was the one to buy.

Shure KW would apprecciate you finding a new insert for him,RATMAN.My box was in good shape although it looked liked it had been retaped a few times.Thought maybe from going through customs.I'm waiting to put mine on for now,but by the looks of it can't you just add longer bolts to use the same holes?

this took all of about 15 mins total time to mount, if you are not going to make mods to the horn mounting, 10mm socket for the horn, and 14mm for the bolts on the floor boards brackets. and a couple of pics from a different veiw and it does look good...

Don't worry about cornering, the back edge of the floor boards will touch down first. The hero knobs on the bottom will let you know....

Ratman - Nice! The installation looks good on your machine. Don't mind you horning in with a few more pictures. Anyone considering these can now see the details of the install. I'm still looking, but would appreciate it if you can find some metric caps. If you do...two please, so I have one spare. The bike looks right with the black bars on it.

Drift1 - You can't just use longer bolts, because the tab that holds the bars together is not flat...it's angled. So, you'd have to bend the original horn bracket first, which is what I thought I was going to do, but then I thought why should I bend the stock bracket if I could just remount it. Drilling two holes was easy. If you want to go one better, drill and tap the holes, then you won't need a nut on the back side. So agree with the Ratman, because it gives him options to mount other horn configurations.

Well done all around boys.

KW thanks for the bit of advice about tapping new holes.Think that's the route I'm shooting for, especially being I just picked up a new tap and dye set for the shifter kit install.A man and his new toys...LOL....I also checked around for them plastic plugs for spares,if and when I find them I'll get a few for you and RATMAN.

RATMAN all joking aside I see them quit often on bobbers, ratbikes. They actually don't look bad on most of them, but they're also just bar hoppers, not meant for any kind of long rides.I wouldn't recommend it on your drifter, but then again there's other known things you've done that I also would not have recommended ,there my good buddie...... ::)  :D ;)

I just ordered those bars from Guido the other day. How long did it take to get them? Also do you have any reccomendations on highway pegs?
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again

MMEDUR,if my memory serves me correctly mine took a little over 2 wks. It's probably going to be different time frames being us Drifter riders are scattered all over this planet. If you haven't read the previous threads, they are a nice looking bar little mod for the horn bracket and adhesive for the plugs. As far as the highway pegs there's some here on  the forum store.I myself haven't gotten that far in my winter projects...LOL.....Also go to the introduction section and introduce yourself to the forum,if you having done so already,be sure to post a pic of your ride......

Welcome, I ordered mine from Guido and had them in like 2 weeks delivery time was realy fast to me in Canada, and it was surprising, the bars are realy awesome.
Like D1 said a small mod for the horn if you want to keep the original horn in the same location. Install was about 45 mins, and remember the plugs otherwise it will be a water collector.
Pegs I have not gotten that far either, and not sure if I need them, want to try them out first, but any clamp on ones that have a clamp that will fit the bar should work really well or you could drill the bars and use a screw mount type.
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: mmedur on February 24, 2013, 00:07:13 AM
Thanks. I looked at the bike and it looks like the first owner moved the horn already Bc all I saw was a nice place to mount the engine guards. I need the highway pegs as I am a big guy (6'4" 280lbs) and I am riding to DC from my home near Boston for memorial day. I havve never worked on my bike before, but I figured out how to take the tank off on my own so I figure bar install should be no problem. One more question, should I put loctite on the bolts for the guard? Also I did read the whole thread and the pictures look great.
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: CDNRatMan on February 24, 2013, 02:39:20 AM
Ok well that will leave you something less to do. Just make sure the holes are not stripped and will take bolts. I used loctite on any nuts/bolts I remove....(old Harley riding habits die hard) Just remember that that Guido's guard is to be loose mounted first, once all the bolts are started and the everything is lined upo then snug them up tight.
Also remember to install the end caps with silicone, I used black just because it was handy and mine is a black front end.

It never hurts to use locktite... just ensure you use BLUE and not RED or Green.

Thank you for all the help. The horn mount has bolts is it right now so I am under the impression that I can reuse those. If not I will figure something out. This is my first go at working on a bike, but I am reasonably mechanically inclined. Just out of curiousity what is the difference in the fifteenth Colorado loctiite?

ok never heard of it, or what it is.

I put the plastic caps in with black silicone as I said before but did it off the bike to just make it easier. I'll have to check out the pegs idea later once I have it out and riding about....

Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: CDNRatMan on February 25, 2013, 16:36:27 PM
easy way is that locktite is to keep parts together and not to separate due to vibration. Blue is for items you would like to take apart by hand tools, red is more permanent and harder to take apart........
Title: Re: Engine Guards for 800 - Again
Post by: chief on February 25, 2013, 19:39:27 PM
As ratman says...Blue allows for removal with handtools, red requires heat to remove the part, and green can be applied after you assemble the part. It makes its way between the threads and acts like red loctite at that point. So use blue.

LMAO.....Ratman it was like two teenager's in this house this morning.I droped the bar off to my brother's place during the week with my truck after work because he just got his tank back from being painted so we figured we could do both projects at his house then go for a ride when the weather broke. So this morning I had to ride the Drifter over to install it.Now being I ride solo seat Aidan insisted he would follow with "HIS"bobber...LOL.For awhile there(during the argument)you would of thought I was arguing with my brother not a 6 yr. old....man it was hillarious, till we woke up the miss's :o

Nice Drifter1, I like the look of your bike. The engine guard looks great on it.

Drift1 - The black bull bar really finishes it off nice. Also like how the protekto trim on the fenders came out. Even though my paintwork is black, I think the fenders need that trim to improve the finished look. I'll do black on black when I have a reason to take the fenders off.

BTW...I notice the fender light is missing...too shiny? Maybe a little wartime "black out" might do the trick (to the head dress). In my opinion, looks good as is with that front guard. Altogether...very nice. Looking thru the whole photo bucket...hats off to getting it all back together without any extra pieces in time for riding season....Happy Easter.

Thanks KW....dude I had the bike down to basically nothing at one point. The PO took good care of this machine and I assured him I would do the same,if not more.Being I wanted the WWW's for that old school look as well to match the white star to try to make it stand out more.I figured I could really get in the tight spots to clean and hit with some wax.Well you know how it goes your brain starts spinning It's wheels, then I was introduced to the forum and saw great ideas that members were sharing and realized even though I'm "no mechanic" I could explore,to comfort zone limitations of course, and if I get jammed up I'd just yell for help.Witch everyone knows I did quite often....LOL...and thank you members. Next thing you know I have parts coming in from every direction.I'm still waiting on things  ;)

For the fender light, the reason I didn't go all black IMOP It's just to big and to much black. The one I purchased is smaller, the chrome goes with the other chrome on the bike such as rims, headlight ring etc.Now the fender light is not just chrome there's black accent in the head dress to match. The reason It's not on at the moment is because I don't like the fact that it stays on during the day so I'm adding an on/off switch for night time use.

Ratman....I actually looked at those lights,in fact I brought one home one weekend,it was just way to big.
Title: Engine Guards for 800 warning
Post by: mmedur on July 07, 2013, 21:21:56 PM
Just as a heads up,  I had he engine guard from Guido installed on my drifter, everything was great and I put about 2000 miles on his year since I got it. I tend to ride somewhat aggressively and have no issues with touching down a floorboard in a corner. Last night I was heading home from work,  took a turn and touched down what I thought was he floorboard slider only to suddenly feel a hard bump to my ankle and difficulty shifting. I safely pulled the bike to the side of the road to check it out. The engine guard had hit the ground hard and bent back pinching  the floorboard up. I removed the engine guard today and aside from needing a new mounting bolt the rest of the bike is fine. After removing it and inspecting that had happened I noticed that both sides were previously scratched. Upon further inspection I realized that the engine guard is the first part to touch down and does not give like the floorboards do.
