Yeah, that progressive pump is the way to go.  Not cheap, but the way to go.  Also, get the rear wheel off the ground to hook up the pump and use it.  If you don't, you'll leak a little oil out of the shocks, and while you can replace it, it's a pain in the rear.

I picked up a motorcycle jack at Harbor Freight and Tool for like $69.  I can't count the number of times I've used it.

it says not to use a tire gauge?

what kind of gauge should one use to check the presuure in your shocks?

should one use a hand pump?

4 is more firm then 1, factory setting is 2.  Also, the factory set the air pressure at 17psi, which they say is right for 170lbs rider.  I'm closer to 260lbs, and I've found that setting 2 and 20-22psi gaves a real nice ride for just me, solo.  I'm still working on the magic setting for the wife and I.  I'm guessing it's somewhere around 30-35psi and a 3 on the preload.

Can any one tell me, on the rear shocks, is the #1 setting the softest and #4 the firmest, i never had a owners manuel,, when i ride 2 up the fender rack tends to hit the inside of the tandum seat frame, not much but just enough,,maby a little more air and a firmer setting,,but i dont witch way to go on the shocks,,,thanks in advance...Gilbo
