When I bought my 1999 1500 I got this from the front area.  Turned out that one of the bolts holding on the plastic fender was missing and the plastic was vibrating, at certain revs, against its mounting steel plate.  Check your mounts for your rear fender; it's just a big guitar body and would probably make a lot of resonance if loose.

Yes, replaced rear end fluid.  Noise only when in gear, not in neutral.

have you checked the rear oil?
is the noise there at an idle or driving down the road ?

:(  Can anyone help with diagnosis for loud grinding noise coming from rear end when getting on throttle.  Sounds kinda like a playing card in spokes of bicycle.  Mechanic thought clutch, had that replaced and noise is still there.  Year is 2003/44,000 miles - would appreciate any help.
