Broken speedometer

Just replaced mine with a 99 nomad cable, dont know how long it'll last, but it isnt rubbing my fender anymore and has lots of room before it will get in a bind.

Has happened to me twice now in 3 years. Breaks at the same place, right by the wheel.

I did not know about the Nomad cable but I will keep that in mind the next time it happens!

Don't think it matters... likely the nomad changed over to electronic at some point, so likely an older nomad.

Yep broken speedo cables are a problem for the 99/00. Do as he says... but replace it with a longer Nomad cable. Seems the longer nomad cable lasts longer.

Hi all,
I was cruising down Rte 93 in northern  New Hampshire the other night, I hit 80 mph and I felt a sudden power loss for a second and then it was fine, during the same moment  I noticed my speedometer dropped to 0 and stayed there.

A guy I met in Hampton with a 99 Drifter said if I unscrew the speedo cable at the wheel and the inner part comes out it is broken and I can get one for $20.00 from my kawi dealer.
I haven't tried yet as it is raining and I am exhausted from my trip, so I figured I would ask on here before I go wrench on the bike.
I see in the manual whee it connects under the tank dash panel but I haven't taken anything apart.
Any tips?
Should I start at the wheel and investigate that cable to see if it is in fact busted?

I am happy to say that during my week away and over 1k miles of driving the bike the speedo was the only problem I had with the bike, I was very happy about that after all the changes I have made and all the things I worked on before I left I half expected trouble and none ever came.
I love this bike.
