1999-2000 Speedo removal from Console without cutting mileage reset twirler

I do feel stupid .

We are waiting for the hurricane here , so that's my excuse .

Just got it into my head that the twirler must have locked tight and I couldn't get a grip on the spindle (thankfully) .

It easily unscrewed - didnt even have to hold the spindle  - duh .

Not clear which Drifter/speedo you're referring to but typically that reset knob is held on with a screw.  Here's how the 99 drifter 1500 works:

Anyone removed the speedo from the black tank console cover . I can't get it out without cutting off the reset twirler for the trip-meter .

I have the speedo & it's shroud off the bike & on the table, but I need to get the speedo out of the housing to repaint the housing. Thnx
