shifting issue

This MAY be an easy fix. I had a similar problem with 2 Viragos that i owned. The issue was moisture or just gunk build up between the shifter shaft and
the shaft hole in the engine case. There is a seal around the shaft that is supposed to stop this, but stuff gets in there anyway. What i did was tip the bike over on its right side and spray "Fluid Film" onto the shifter shaft area. Then i worked the shifter up and down for a bit to try to work in the Fluid Film. Problem solved and engine tear down nightmare avoided. Not saying that this is your problem but doesn't hurt to try easy stuff first.
And make sure you use "Fluid Film" I have used this stuff extensively for many years and it is amazing. It actually bubbles up and crawls it way into tight spots to get at rust. Plus it lubes and resists water. Can be used for hundreds of applications.

Hi guys.

Newbie to the site and thanks for the add.  Been riding and racing (offroad enduros) for about 43 years. 1 issue to check on shifting issues if you suddenly have the lever not go in gear etc or it gets "stuck"  .  You may have to remove the side case, remove clutch basket etc to gain access to the shift star mechanism that turns the shift drum. A bolt holding this star may have backed out or spring broke. Usually the shift shaft crosses over into clutch area and is accessible.  Check the schematic on this and keep us posted.

the only shifting issue I had with my bike (which I've since sold;-() is in extreme heat it seemed to shift harder.  but your issue, if I were to take a blind stab, might be clutch related.  Is your cable properly adjusted?  is there anything a little off about your clutch--does it ever try to grab or slip?  If not the clutch, is everything with your shifting linkage adjusted right?  do you know if anything with either the clutch or shift linkage has been recently changed? If your oil is all good and nothing else seems off, those 2 things (clutch and linkage) would be what I'd look into.  Hopefully your tranny, which is essentially bullet proof, isn't going out!  Let us know what you learn.

BTW, nice that you Florida guys can do a 200 mile ride in winter!!

Mmmmh, that's a strange thing.
I own a 800 and it's 20 years now, since I bought her. Never had such a issue like that.

[Easy Drifter]

During a 200 mile ride yesterday, at about 75 miles in, my '02 800 with 7800 miles on it started to develop a "no shift" condition.

As I was slowing and attempting to downshift no input to the shift lever would make it downshift. Along with this the "neutral finder"

seemed to be non existent.  Any ideas as to why it became uncooperative?  Oil level and type is correct/ fresh change about 400

miles ago. This was the longest trip to date on this bike that I acquired with 6800 miles on it. All services have been completed....
