Okay turns out you were right Troll, as usual, the bolt at the top of the triple tree was not as tight as it should be and when I cranked on it it actually took up the little bit of play that was in my steering head. So I actually pulled it out and put just a little spot of Loctite on it. Thanks a lot for your help.

Could be loose rivets in the fender mounting. I replaced mine with stainless 6mm button heads about 100,000 miles ago..

Have you checked to see if the bearings are actually loose?   I'd suggest jacking up the front, take the weight off the front wheel, and see if the steering head actually IS loose.  If they are not - it's some other issue you're having.  If they are loose-  better figure out why - they have a tendency for the bearings to go bad.   I don't think there's much issue with making things worse if nothing is wrong.

The nuts not loose. I was hoping not to have to tear the thing down to repack or anything but I guess sounds like I have no choice other than do nothing. And I'm tempted to do nothing because I've heard horror stories of people getting into their steering head bearings and making matters worse even though they followed the manual

When I hit my front brakes going over bumps I can feel what I believe is some play in my steering head bearings does anybody else have that? I wonder can I adjust those without too much trouble?

When was the last time you lubed them? Don't just tighten them up, pack them with grease and adjust them according to the manual. Check to see if the big chrome nut on the upper tree is loose.....happens.
