Exhaust for my drifter 800

Went trough Hell Riser Customs and Hard Krome went back into production of the American Classic II and just received my set. I installed them tonight and will post pics soon. They look and sound great!

I sort of straddle the fence here because the first question is what is loud? I have the Roadhouse exhaust setup and consider it rather tame compared to some stuff out there. A nice rumble is really nice, will not aggravate your neighbours at 0630 as you depart for work or come home late. But I am missing something rather important in this "loud pipes save lives" issue so perhaps someone can set me correct on this.
So make this simple, I am northbound at 55 mph, my pipes are facing south, a distracted driver coming towards me so he is southbound, talking on his cell phone, running at 75 mph. How is going to hear my loud pipes, or when does he hear my loud pipes to save my life, or would extra lights not be more effective in this picture.
I know people who have honestly make your ears bleed pipes, and they get such a hoot out of rapping them at people walking along a country road, or just letting them rap as they rev them in a quiet neighbourhood. Ok so put it out there......

I would say in the residential area at slow speeds as I described above and slow city traffic speeds are the times their paying benefits but at highway speeds less to little effect. I have not heard Roadhouse but my Roadburners  pipes have a great rumble and sound.  Having race pipes on my  Haybusa's previously which I would consider those LOUD in the high/loud range and these Roadbunners are in medium/loud range and stock being in the Low/loud range.

Well to each his own on the loud exhaust.  All it does is increase my tinnitus and give me a headache. In my riding experience loud pipes have not saved lives. Maybe pedestrians can hear you coming but I don't think other motorists can especially those wearing earbuds, or those rice burners with obnoxious subwoofers vibrating the ground, and drivers who are distracted by everything (read smart phones). "Good riding saves lives" 

I am in the middle here. I like a nice throaty rumble. Goes with the 1939 Indian look of the bike.... The load sharp pops and cracks of Road House and others like that are WAY too loud for me. The stock have a sound I would call "ugly". But my pipes which I got when I bought the bike have a really nice deep but not too loud sound!

Respectfully disagree.  I love my bikes loud. Not only is it safer (other drivers hear you and so do deer) but it is definitely more fun to drive.  My Drifter with stock pipes is so quiet and boring that I wouldn't ride it nearly as much as I do with loud pipes.  I keep my stock pipes merely because if I ever sell it, it would make the sale more appealing.

To each his own but louder, for me, is definitely the way to go.

Agree with Bam Bam.  I kept my stock just to have it but it sounds like an angry cat.  I installed RoadBurner Exhaust same as Hardchrome is the maker of both and very similar to VH Pipes.  Now my Drifter has a healthy Siberian tiger roar and purrrr at idle and healthy heartbeat of cool sound.  Every bike I ever owned stock sounded like a scooter and I changed to aftermarket to hear it.  Now people who don't see me riding can hear it.

Safety wise when riding thru my residential area (NO sidewalks) people never heard me coming right after purchasing my Drifter, their walking dogs , kids riding bikes, people walking and I was concerned someone coming out in street , right in front of me since their moving in the same direction and don't see me coming.  Now with aftermarket pipes, if they don't see me they can now hear me and look behind them as I come up the street.  SO for Safety alone it's worth it 100%.

**Don't forget to buy two new exhaust gaskets.  If you keep everything else stock like I did, i.e.- air cleaner there is no need to rejet bike.

Looking for new exhaust but unfortunately Hard Krome and Road Burner are no longer available for my 800. Any suggestions as I like the long look of those pipes. I am new to the site and am still trying to figure out how to add pics of my bike. Thanks

I prefer stock pipes.  Loud pipes are obnoxious and the only one who likes them is the owner of the motorcycle they are on.

As these bikes become more and more rare, the stock bikes will be worth quite a bit more than the butchered rat rod bikes.

If you're trying to swap out your existing stock exhaust, there might be someone willing to trade who has aftermarket pipes. My bike which I bought last year already had shotguns, very similar to Road burners, and I really didn't want aftermarket pipes. Well I've since made friends with them and have put in the correct baffles and so forth, but I would not mind having the stock 800 drifter exhaust. Too bad you're in Wisconsin and I'm in Washington.

When I got my bike the pipes had two scratches on them so as far as trading I don't think anybody would want them. I wouldn't want pipes with a couple scratches... Does anybody know how the stock sounds with baffles removed?
