Thanks for the stud suggestions guys.  I've been jonesing for a small lathe for some time, just so I could to this kind of a job, but since it's the only job I have in the queue, it's been a tough sell to the warden  :D

No doubt about it... Drifter ownership definitely lends itself to creative shop engineering....

Been there done that but my solution is the reverse.  I chuck a bolt in my hand drill and spin it against a bench grinder. Works every time.

Know anyone with a lathe? Pretty straightforward job for a machinist to take a 10mm bolt, turn it down on one end, and re-thread it. Just a thought. You could even chuck a 10 mm bolt of correct length in a drill press, turn it down using a file, and hand thread it. I've made a lot of odd-ball parts with nothing more than a drill press and files and emery cloth. Just a thought.

Hi Jimbo:

I think (and not sure why I think) that the F&S covers were never avabile specifically for the Drifter.  However the only difference between the original Classic cleaner covers and the Drifter covers are the size of the cover mounting screws so the covers for the Classic are easily adapted.

My problem is that I want to use the small F&S 'knobs' that were also available for the Classic (and maybe Nomad) but not the Drifter - easily rectified with a dual thread stud - 10mm on one end and 8 on the other (I think)  - just so happens that's the right size for a Volkswagen Beetle exhaust manifold stud.  The problem is that the ball milled cover covers that I have are pretty thick where the mounting screw goes through so the dual thread studs I have for the 'knobs' are not long enough.  So, I've been searching for the right length dual thread stud for a few years now.

(That's more than your probably ever wanted to know about air cleaner covers  ;D)

Bucko, Seems you hit the nail on the head. These cover do have the "Vulcan V" milled or molded into their side.

They were also available in ball milled chrome although I think those were aftermarket - maybe Cobra or Arlen Ness.

Just an update: Kawasaki F&S also had a chrome (maybe black too?) ball milled version.

It's hard to tell for sure from your photo but the black covers on your chrome air cleaner covers look like the Kawasaki Fire & Steel 'Vulcan' ones (big stylized 'V' engraved into the cover).  They came in Black and Chrome.  They were also available in ball milled chrome although I think those were aftermarket - maybe Cobra or Arlen Ness.

I like the contrasted look you have there.  I found a set of black air cleaner covers from a Mean Streak and was going to put Chrome ball milled cover covers over them to get a similar contrast.  Another in a long list of things I never seem to get around to doing.  :o

Here is one that came on my bike.  It is anodized billet aluminum. I have never seen one like it.

This might help: http://www.gadgetjq.com/HC-TFI_install.htm

Also, if you go to Gadgets main page and look through the "Bolt On's & Mod's (Harder)" section you'll find more.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for,I have Indian derby covers on mine. I know it's not everyone's taste but I love it.

there are those ugly, trite, "Live to ride/ride to live" ones. I like my stock 8" round one....

Are there any custom air cleaner covers out there? I'm not looking to replace the entire intake system, just to replace the stock cover with a different one. Do these exist? All the covers I've looked at are complete replacements of the intake and cost a ton.
