I noticed on the spec sheets that the rake, seat height and overall size were very close. The reason I was asking was for fit, my nomad fit me perfectly, this bike was in Lakeland fl. and I am in Indiana didn't want to drive 16 hours for nothing

Yes. One more thing... the J models had a smaller fuel tank than the R models, but the fuel filter is mounted outside the tank...that might be an advantage, might not...

I looking at a 2000 1500 22k miles it is for sale in florida for 4000

1. was there a total blackout model ?  ( air cleaner and cylinder covers)
2. is the drifter on basically the same frame as the nomad?
3. Is this a good price

Let's start with the frame question...answer: no. Very different in the rear half, swingarm is different, too, as is the fork, the rear brake...closer to a classic, but not the same. J models were "blacked out", but not completely. The engine was silver, rather than chrome. As far as the price goes, that's up to what the market will bear...According to the latest MCN used bike value guide, it's worth, well it's not on their chart anymore...they start with the '01, and list it at $2965...According to Kelly Blue Book, the 2000 J model has a retail value of $3930....so your goose is as good as mine....
