Just imagine if there were idiots like me educating our ancestors 250 years ago.. A bit like the father in Calvin and Hobbes.

Washington State does not require insurance on motorcycles.  So I buy insurance when the season starts and I am going out of state where other states do require it.

Geigo Insurance has an exception clause that limits the amount of mileage to 500 miles in a 24 hour period.  It is in the Exceptions Section.

That's what I did for years, not with Beacon but with a couple of other insurers that provided similar coverage.  Big discount over ICBC.  The downside for me was that they wouldn't sell me a policy for less than a year.  When the bike was new, full year coverage was OK as one of my major concerns was theft (and some pricks did try to steal it twice).  However, as the bike got older and the value was going down (and after I moved to a better neighborhood  :)) it didn't make sense to pay the increasing cost for yearly coverage when I only had the bike on the road for a few months (interestingly enough, ICBC optional coverage for 3 or 4 months was only marginally cheaper than a full year's coverage from my alternate insurer - what's that tell ya?).

In any case, I eventually dropped the optional coverage.  At this point, the cash saved on dropping the optional coverage now exceeds the replacement cost of the bike so it's was the right choice in my case.

For any of you guys 'n gals in B.C., several years ago I switched over to Beacon for all my coverages; all I get from ICBC is registration, plate fee, and basic liability. All other coverages are through Beacon. I buy the Beacon policy for the year, doing it this way saves several hundred dollars a year. And, they are very good to deal with. The first year I used Beacon, I had my first (and I hope my only one) motorcycle accident, when some clown sashayed out of a parking lot and t-boned the wife and I on out Harley; they (the insurance company) treated us VERY well. Just sayin'  ;)

OK not trying to argue with everyone but Britain is one of the cold countries, We have dug up dinosaur bones and ferns which we are told means that the dinosaurs lived in a hot climate and their riders drank beer made from ferns, Later it got even hotter so they invented ice and opened a coke cola factory, the ice spilled from the large glasses and formed glaciers which reflected the sun back up in the sky, because the sun was being reflected instead of warming the planet, the dinosaurs and their riders all froze and died..

This was called man made global cooling and it got so bad that the British government had to introduce clobal cooling taxes that were so high that a number of people built a massive ark called the Mayflower which they filled with heating oil and sailed away to the west never to be seen again, but rumour has it that they built a big fire in a place called Howareyee which which was the first thing the sailors from Devon said when they greeted the locals, this became known as Hawaii because in those days they were all stoned and couldn't spell, this big fire was so hot it set fire to a mountain and the smoke was so black it stopped the sun from bouncing back into space so the planet started to warm up again..

Some fools still believe that it is all a natural cycle, for so many years the planet warms up and we get tropics, then it cools down and we get an ice age, then it warms up again and we get tropics again and this is why they say these things date back to the last ice age and it has nothing to do with man.

But we need big motorcycles to cover the huge distances in our country.  As far as the global warming scam goes, the evidence says it's a no go.

John Hopkins

Well if you colonials didn't run such big motorcycles the government wouldn't have to spend so much on global warming and highly paid advisors to combat it..

John.

Tim

That's right. And being a government "non-profit" means they have to spend whatever comes in in high salaries. Nice little scam they have going... Don't get me started on MSP too.  :)

Bucko

Here in BC, by law, basic insurance is compulsory and also, by law, the provider is ICBC which is a government run insurance agency.  The real benefit of Government run monopoly insurance scheme is significantly higher premiums.  So there's that.

A word of caution:  The guest bedroom shares a wall with the music studio.  It can get loud in that part of the house!

Man!  Those are some crazy numbers you guys are throwing out there!  I'm more like Troll in that I pay about $200 for full coverage, including $10,000 replacement coverage if the bike is totaled.  Shoot, honestly the thing is worth more totaled then it is as it sits, but I like it, so I'll hang on to her.

Tim

Haha you guys are awesome! You sound like me and my father in law complaining about insurance. :)
Indian Red hey? Where did they get the name? Just kidding.
I want to find an original '48 in a museum somewhere and hold up paint swatches to get a good match. :)

Somewhere in all this insurance talk there was a question regarding the name of the original Indian Red.  It's called "Indian Red"

Hmmm.   I guess that should have been obvious...

Speaking of insurance, what a racket!   What other industry do you know of where year after year the price stays the same, but the "value" of the merchandise DROPS so drastically?   Would you pay full price for half worn-out tires??  Would you pay full price for a half-eaten sandwich?   How about a 3 year old TV?  Full price??    Of course not.....    Yet we buy a vehicle for let's say $10,000 - Insurance the first year is $X ,   Next year.... same $X (unless there's an increase).   5 years later, if we say with the same company, still $X !!!  But the vehicle is now worth about $3000!

And how about that Multi-Car Discount??    I insure several vehicles, and get (I think) about 10% discount.  But if you do the math, if I have 2 insured vehicles, my chance of having a claim is about exactly 1/2 (50%).   If I have 3 vehicles, it's 33%....  because, SURPRISE... I can't drive more than one at a time, so IMO the liability portion of my additional vehicles after the first one should be nearly nothing.  I can understand the fire & theft part being at 100%.

Quick, get me off the soapbox before somebody mentions the mandatory included towing coverage that's added in there.....

But Indian Red, seriously, were the Indians the only thing painted that shade of red???

No Worries

And yet the really big boys like Lloyds of London can insure space shuttles..

The big boys can get away with anything to get as much money as possible from us small people.

John.

CDNRatMan

I tried to get insurance with a company in Toronto, 5 hours south of here and was told that I was outside their coverage area. So that cut that idea off.

That would be great, John, except for one little detail: The company has to be licensed to do business in the state you live in, so since that would essentially put them in the same pool as the other companies, they would most likely have near the same prices...they can always go higher, but there is a premium floor that they can't violate. If we could do that, then we would also be buying health insurance across state lines, but that is illegal, too
