On my 2006 800 drifter they way they have the carb designed the crankcase vents into the sealed section of the air filter backplate (where the snorkel goes to the airbox) and then goes to the "milk bottle" that hangs from the right front bottom of the frame near the oil filter, see if your's is full. If it is, dump the oil from the milk bottle cause there is no place for newly vented oil mist to go and you will have a oil backup problem.  There is a small coil spring in the milk bottle so if you squeeze it too hard out shoots the spring. It's there for keeping the bottle neck open when the hose & spring clamp are attached. Palidin

When I bought my Drifter, it had more than 5 quarts of oil in her. My husband drained the oil and changed the filter and then put the correct amount of oil in her. He then cleaned excess oil out of right side air cleaner cover. After he changed the oil, and he took it on a long ride, it still is sucking a very small amount of oil into the right cover. Is this a known problem or is there still oil coming into the air cleaner because of the previous overfil? Any thoughts? Please advise. Thank you and I appreciate your help.

DQ, Some oil in the air filter housing or throttle body housing is normal for alot of V-twin engines, especially single-pin crank models.
Single pins displace air in the crankcase on every downstroke and there's oil in the air.
Just out of curiosity, did/does your bike have any oil leaks on the engine and trans?
Hoping the overfilling didn't create other problems.
Best of luck with your new-to-you scooter!

I am very happy to say that Sunday my husband and I went on a scooter ride and although we only rode 60 miles (I'm recovering from bronchitis) when we got home, there didn't seem to be any kind of oil leak. On monday morning, I went to the garage to check on her and still no oil leakage and no oil on the outside of the cover. Wow, I think I dodged a bullet with that one. Thank you my friendly and knowledgable Drifter buddies for your help as always. I know I can count on you for your help.

If there was excess oil in the air cleaner... likely still some coming out of the filter. Run it a bit and see if it still happens now that everything it right.

Cheers.

Didn't have this issue before the change?

My bet is it's the overfill and it's coming through the PCV valve.  maybe someone else will have a different insight though.  I've been a hot rod guy for the last few decades and only rediscovered bikes last fall.  On a car, my money would be on that though, and I can't imagine a bike is a whole lot different.
