I'm running the V&H Longshots with a Power Commander and the exhaust pipes have a slight yellow tinge. No dyno, just pulled the baffles and loaded in the map.
My buddy has a Vulcan Bagger with the V&H pipes but decided not to use a Power Commander. His exhaust pipe have turned a deep blue, the chrome shields are fine. Which means he is running to hot and lean.
As stated you can always get one later if necessary.

From the front though, all you see is great looking pipes!

The V&H pipes shouldn't blue because the setup is really a pipe for the exhaust with a chrome cover on the front half of the pipes that hose clamps on over it, leaving a slight gap between them.  This is done specifically to counteract bluing.  Here's what I'm talking about.  This is a shot of the back of my Vance & Hines Longshots from the catalytic converter area.  You can just see the back of the passenger floor board in the top corner of the pic (yeah, I need to redo the leather this winter, I know).  You'll notice the hose clamp (which you can't really see from the front) holding on the cover and the gap I was talking about.

Dear Pcarrell & Chief.

I like the V&H Bagger Dual Exhaust (Nomad) system (ZZ44032 on J&P) as the bulk emulates the original Drifter while having an exhaust each side , which is something I have always wanted.
I assume, from my reading,  that I can use a cross over pipe , bracket as per template in Mods, and a Classic/Nomad right passenger footpeg mount. If I don't need a PCIII /Cobra ,that is good, as I was worried about blue-ing.

Thanks for the great feedback.  :)

The FI boxes are permanently mounted. With the PCIII you need maps and should really have the bike dyno'd to get the best result. With the Cobra they are set out of the box for certain pipes, but work with many others. POTS (potentiometers) are simply "knobs" / switches which adjust certain ranges of the box.

A pipe exchange usually doesn't require a FI box... but that is dependent upon the pipes. My Big Willys caused decel backfiring so I added a Cobra, made on adjustment and its been fine since (12 years). Try the change without the box... if there are indications you need one you can add it afterwards.

I know that you asked Chief about this, but if you don't mind a little outside input.........

I have the V&H Longshots on my bike with the stock air filter, and I can say that all I had to do was marble the engine to control popping on deceleration and it runs like a champ.  The stock exhaust is so restrictive that opening up the exhaust with these pipes just makes it breath like it should.  The popping was always going on with the stock system, but it was so restricted that you just didn't hear it.

There's 2 ways to cure the popping.  I marbled my engine as it's a 5 minute fix, but I'll give you links to both ways.

Now, I have both of my pipes on one side, but I don't think adding the 1 foot of extra pipe to cross the already shorter pipe over to the other side would change anything.  By doing that, essentially, both pipes are roughly the same length, so it shouldn't make a difference.

Maybe 49 will chime in, as he's the author of the tip in the mods section?  http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/vhbag.html

Chief,

I've been reading/searching this topic on the forum & the Mods section - and getting a little confused.

My old original exhaust neds replacing. I'm thinking Vance & Hines as they seem popular and have model specific pipes on their site.
I have done the toaster fix & removed the emission hoses. I have the original air filter and intend to keep it.

Do I need a Power Commander 3 or similiar when I fit the V & H, or is that only when I replace both the air filter & use the toasters.
If a PCIII is required,  is this unit permanently mounted, or is it a tuning tool to plug in and then remove when it re-maps the ICU -
(assuming this is what it does , or does it override the ICU and need to remain plugged in to the electrics ?)
With regard to Cobra instead  of PCIII - what are POTS ?
I'm assuming that if i need a PCIII, then I need to tune it in using a Dyno tester. Is this correct ?

Thanks
