My fiance really wanted a backrest for the Drifter. We got the bike primarily for two-up riding. I already had an adjustable generic backrest for use with the Corbin Saddle on m ZRX. It seemed a shame to have to go out and get another if we could come up with a way to mount it on the Drifter seat. We also wanted a small rack to use for a tail trunk or maybe just a picnic basket!

Yesterday I went to a friends welding shop with all of my stuff including the solo saddle stuff I just posted about. After a few hours of pondering - measuring - head scratching, this is what we came up with:

The seat rail was modified by welding two pieces of one inch stock. The vertical piece was drilled to attach the backrest via the existing bolt and threaded hole on the backrest and a nut and bolt in the new hole on the backrest post. The angle of the backrest is adjustable.

The rack is a simple aluminum unit that is attached to the bike sub-frame at the rear most bolt holes and hung by two pieces of twisted stock from the newly added cross-piece on the seat-rail. The idea was to make the modification reversible if desired. It's pretty easy to set the bike up in several configurations as desired.

Now, I need to prime and paint all of the steel pieces and re-paint the seat rail. I also have to decide if I want the rack to be black too. It has kind of a hook and ladder truck vibe right now Maybe over the winter I will send all that stuff for powder coating to get a really durable finish. I think I also need to have the seat re-shaped some. It is good for abut 100 miles. I want to be good for about 300 or more.
