HOT start issues

In my case, the air filter was new this year, wouldn't have more than a thousand Km's or so on it and none of that in wet or dusty conditions.

I put new plugs in just last week and haven't really had time to see if it makes any difference for a hot start but I couldn't feel any difference from old to new under cold start and regular driving conditions (and the old plugs that I pulled out looked fine even thought they had about 43 thousand kilometers on them - I think that must be a few more than the spec  :D).

Silly question: How old are the spark plugs? Even the "new" tech will wear out. Checked your air filter lately? Dirty air filter will make a hot restart more difficult.

Exactly same symptoms. I think anything above three cranks is absurd for a bike. Most bikes I've owned take a blip of the starter FI and carbed.

I too have noticed just this year that hot starts on my 01 1500 take a bit more cranking. I've never, since new had to do anything other than just tap the starter under any condition for a clean start.  Now when it's hot and the motor is hot, it sometimes takes several start attempts before it catches.  It's not that I really have to crank it, it just doesn't start as easily as it used to when it's hot.   Plenty of cranking so it's not the battery in my case.

Thanks for the replies it not the battery. I have a brand new battery it drain it after a good couple of minutes of trying within breaks to cool the starter. It spins fast  also when I start it cold I can smell fuel possibly blowing out of the air filter?

Just had the same thing happen to me today, guessing may be the the battery isue as this is the first long ride with the stereo going.

Simple things first. Have your battery load tested. My money is on that battery being bad. Had the battery go south several years ago on my 1500 while in Montana; started losing power, bike running like a rag, barely got back to my Dads' shop. Took the battery in, ad it load tested, kaput. New battery, all was well.

As to the intake/exhaust mods, if you phone the tech services help line (for your PCIII) they will walk you through hooking your laptop up to your Power Commander module, then they will set the module for proper air/fuel mixture. Also check/tune TPS, etc. They did mine, took them about 20 minutes. Bike has run good since.

+1 on putting a new battery in .

Not all 12V batteries are the same. As stated by Greenbarn - you need a good battery. I think this is shorthand for high cranking Amperage.
My original Super MF FTZ16-BS was 12V 18Ah (78 months before replacement), this gives from memory about 220 Cranking Amps - which is what you need for two big pistons, each the size of a 4 cyl 750. A FTX of FTH will be 12V 14Ah which gives you about 170 Cranking Amps - enought initially when fresh, but tires easily with use.
I have had similiar problems with longevity/more trying conditions when I was told a 14A was sufficent - had to replace it within a year.

To elaborate, if the battery will only turn over the engine a couple of cranks, and then it's dead, then the battery sounds bad.  The 1500 takes a good battery to make the electronics work, and if the battery is low ( low voltage )  then it will not start.

No Worries

greenbarn

Sounds like you need a battery.

Hi have a hot start issue. So I ride 20min or so in light traffic and stop to get something to drink, and the bike won't start I usually can get it to start on full choke after  three cranks when hot but this time It just drain my battery after a couple of good cranks.

I have powercommander VH longshots and big air intake the bike has 28k mi.
I have cleaned the throttlebody
Is there anything else I could adjust ????
