Front Sprocket?

I agree with cdnrratman this sounds like a clutch adjustment thing vs a sprocket.
The nice thing about swapping sprockets on these 800's, is that its so easy and inexpensive.
try it and don't like it, and you aren't out hardly anything.   heck, worst case is you got a spare if your in a pinch

mine was 17/40
Princess was 17/38
blue was 17/40
mine after was 18/40

and you think Princess gets off the line faster or father down before the clutch is all out.
So perhaps it had to do with the sprocket because honest I never noticed any change on take off when I swapped out the front sprocket.

Mine came stock as well. I changed both of them, along with a new chain, during my winter/spring tune-ups/mods.  As a result, it was several months between the stock setup and the new sprockets.  That said, I still notices a huge difference in top-end improvements.  I was concerned the gearing would be high enough that it would be harder to take off from a stop - however, I didn't see any issues with the clutch use, or stalling when taking off, or any "too high gear" issues at all. I honestly couldn't tell the difference on take-off, even with 2-up riding.  Part of that could be the 5 month break in between, but I don't think it made much difference on low end.

I bought my ride with the stock sprockets, then switched the front to a 18T. I never really noticed a change in take off nor clutch use. I did notice a huge change in the top end. This winter I have changed to the 38T rear so have nothing to really say about it.
Perhaps your clutch needs adjustment?
But the 18/38 was not an issue at low speeds or take off that was enough to notice, or at least in my riding style.

Thanks for the comments, Ratman.  Clutch is in adjustment.  Maybe I should try to explain the 'leap' better...  She covers more ground before you're done letting the clutch out than 2beers' bike does.  I'm wondering if it has to do with the change to the rear sprocket, with the front one stock at 17T.

Theres a wealth of information here about sprockets and gearing, but I still have a question. Princess came to me with 17T (stock) front and 38T rear.  Blue (hubby's bike) has front and rear stock gearing. He's ridden both bikes, and theres a huge difference overall. My question is about takeoff and clutch wear. Princess leaps ahead when you first let out the clutch, Blue takes a little throttle and eases out smoothly.

So the question is, for those of you who changed your sprockets to 18T/38T, how's the takeoff?  If there's less leap and clutch riding than we have with Princess now, I'd be willing to make the change.
