Pondering a 2000 Drifter 1500 - What to look for?

I guess you need to understand the differences...

Have a look at the pics of drifters from 1999... on the website... DRIFTER INFO tab... a LOT of good info there.

1999-2000 - Very little chrome, 4.2 ribbed gal tank, blacked out forks etc., analog instruments, double seat.

2001 - forward - a lot more chrome, 5 gal tank (no rib), electronic controls, solo saddle.

In 2003 there was a recall for the oil filter system... it uses an entirely different oil filter. Be SURE the recall has been done. You could end up dumping your oil on a cold startup. I think there was a recall in 99 or so for the tip over sensor, but not sure if it really impacted the drifter.

Some folks had problems with the speedo cable on the 99's and 00's. Some were too short and were replaced.

Also, later models have a beefed up clutch spring and double holders (vs single). All model year 1500's can be updated with these - and should be.

I like the retro style, but with the modern tech and chrome... so I prefer the 2001 and later. But many folks prefer the chrome-less styling of the early models. I also like the 5 gal tank - it is constructed differently from the 4.2 and looks better IMHO without that bottom flange.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any model you select.

Cheers.

As to the best year of 1500 Drifter, there really isn't one.  There are a few differences over the years, but for the most part there's two main groups as I see it.  There's the 1999 & 2000 models, the blackout bikes, and then there's the rest (2001-2005).  Each has slightly different characteristics, so it's kinda like comparing apples to oranges so to speak.

The blackout bikes remain the truest (is that a word?) to the original concept of bringing back the "vintage" look.  There is little chrome, just like the bikes of yesteryear.  They have mechanical speedo's (No, not the tiny swim trunks!) and so they have slightly less fuel capacity.  Most people I've talked to seem to go about 100 miles on a tankfull.

The 2001 and on bikes have a healthy dose of chrome, an electronic speedometer, and a bit more room in the tank.  Myself, I have a 2001, and I get almost exactly 140 miles before the low fuel light comes on.  That is mostly relaxed cruising in the country, a little city driving, and even a twist on the throttle for grins once in a while.  Also, the 2003 models had a recall on the oil filter arrangement, but as far as I know, it only affected that year.  Lastly, for the 2004 & 2005 model years the clutch arrangement was upgraded to a two holder system vs. a single holder.  This upgrade can be retrofitted as a straight drop-in to all older models.  You can also beef up the clutch spring by using the MeanStreak spring if you're doing the holder upgrade.

As to the value, a lot depends on mileage, overall condition, options, and even the area of the country.  I'd take a good look at Craigslist in your area to get a good idea of whats out there.  Just do a search on "Drifter" and you should pull up a couple within a state or so away.  You can also go to the for sale area on this site ( http://www.saftek.com/autoandmotorcycle/pp-classifieds/showcat.php?cat=1&stype=1&si=&perpage=12&sort=1&stype=&limit=&cat=1&ppuser= ) to get an idea.

I'm new to the Forum, and, I always liked the Drifter. I currently ride a Ducati S2R, a 2006, and I love it, and will keep it.

What should I watch out for when pondering a 1500 Drifter? Are certain model years more desireable? What are Maintinence/Reliability/Recall issues with this Bike? I'm about to look at a low mileage 2000 model.

What's an unmodified 2000 Drifter worth on the market?

What would be your "Dream" 1500 Drifter, as to year, color, equipment, etc etc?

Thanks;

LJB
