Looks very nice. If you want, I bet you could add a Givi or Hepco-Becker adapter plate to your rack and get one of their lockable topboxes for protected storage...

Ratman , the rack turned out great ! This should free that back seat up for ya , on short runs . Looks to me that should hold a fair amount of weight as well for them longer trips .

  ok back to the project. I can now pack my lunch and a few other items to take to work and not cram it all on the back part of the seat. Will be testing it out this coming weekend when I go to my sister's for a visit.
This is rattle can finished and will be powder coated over the winter to make it match better with the rest of the bike.

  ok back to the luggage rack......
it is aluminium and so not the best to work with really but got it bent to the correct angle I was looking for and then I needed to add a couple of brackets to the sissy bar, I just wish I was a welder like some others are, but I am happy with the outcome, I used golf shafts as spacers....lol lots of them laying about. Right now rattle canned for paint and will powder coat it over the winter. Once the J.B. Weld is cured I'll mount it on the bike for a picture.

  Things are on hold for a few days, my sister is back in the hospital so I am not doing much till we know more. But I have a few ideas and I have a couple of the lads in the shop said they are more then happy to lend a hand with welding and fabrication, it will be a change of pace for them from working on fleet vehicles.

You know, Wompus Racks ( http://www.wompusracks.com/kawasaki-rack.html ) has a 1500 Drifter solo seat rack.  I don't see an 800 one, but maybe if you contact them and offer your bike as a pattern they'd hook you up with a free one?

On the other hand, maybe an afternoon in the shop would be good?  You could whip up something like this to bolt up to your bike (hanging on a wall, so turn your head sideways.........yeah, you look silly like that!).

   I tried about a dozen flips and ideas, I have a new idea and it will involve some welding and polishing, then to the powder coater to make it pretty, but now I have a new idea which I'll check out tomorrow.....thanks D1

Most of the stuff I take you need around here, I have my rain gear in there, I also carry a fly coat with me just in case, anyone ever have to walk far in this country and deal with the black flies will understand. I could go on but it would bore you, and my lap top is in the red pack...lol...really it is just to take a bit of the strain and weight off the straps of the pack, and later to carry my lunch to work.....yes lunch.....

Dude what the hell are you lugging around?The gnome will fit on the back seat and as far as clothes go I'm not even going to bother with that subject ....and didn't see any golf clubs or fishing poles....LOL...on a serious note I've never seen leather wrapped on a rack from the manufacture,I find that rather odd,anyway this may sound crazy but did you try to flip the rack upside down?Trying to visualize here but the ear you have circled in your last pic may line up better with your sissy bar then depending on the material weld that ear to the bar.Just a thought.Wonder what it looks like flipped over?

  Well I sent pictures and measurements to Osprey to see if it would fit, the response was a couple of "L" brackets and it would fit fine......well not the case.

  I just got my rack from Ospreylimited, and it needs some mods so I am going to call in a few favours because I am not talented like petemoss or 49, even like GreenBarn so I have people I can beg, cry ,plead with to help me.......and it will get done.......

  Ok been on a quest for a bit now I want a luggage rack for my 800, have not found one ready made, I find most of the ready made one that the rack sits way to high for what I want. I have a sissy bar pack which is awesome and takes a huge load, then I have my laptop pack which is really nice and huge to. I can pack a lot of kit into the 2 of them and it is really simple to load and unload, and only have 3 extra straps to hold it all in place, in my last couple of trips nothing has shifted or moved so I just want a rack to have my pack just rest on it .....the first 2 pics of the luggage racks I found but are too high...third pic  is were I want the rack to sit.
