are the 1064 and 1071 ecu interchangable?

no first hand experience but: I believe the real difference is in the mapping. See Post 17 in

Greetings,

I am a new owner of a '99 1500 Drifter and have recently encountered a problem with my ecu. I first experienced a problem with the bike cutting off when I tried to accelerate around a dump truck that was about to back over me. I managed to avoid being crushed but the bike immediately cut off when I hit the throttle. I did a little reading and tracked the problem down to the "down sensor" not being mounted properly. It seems the former owner or his mechanic forgot to remount it when servicing the battery or installing some other wiring. A couple of weeks later I noticed that after being shut down for awhile, it wouldn't start unless I cycled the main ignition several times until the FI light would go out. After I had to do this for about 15 minutes following a trip to the parts store, I decided to try to track the problem down. I was a little impatient and didn't wait til I got home to consult my service manual and wound up hitting the signal wire to the ecu, which is supposed to provide a 4.4v signal, with 12v directly form the battery. (I know..EPIC FAIL)  :-[
Now that you have some backround, the question. Is my ecu destroyed and if so, will the 1071 from a '00 Nomad work since mine is a '99 drifter with a 1064?

I think you will find there are differences..your Drifter is probably a J1 and I think the ICU you want to replace it with is the same one used in the R1 and R2..You can check this by looking up the part numbers..If I'm right the pin outs are different..

John.
