Mine will take off from 5th no problem, don't ask me how I know. It's the sidestand switch, what else could it be? Nothing, that's what. Jiggle it or hit it with your shoe like my mama would do. I imagine it's stuck shut.

Anti-hero

Yea when I disconnect the harness and jump it the nuetral light won't go on but the bike starts with clutch pulled in... I'll put in first cause I can hear the gears shift and it'll still die out

Troll

This going to sound like a silly question, but...You said something about it not showing a neutral light... are you sure you are in 1st gear when you try to take off? Not meant as an insult, but as we all know, $h!t happens...

Yea but it's still shutting down... When I jump the harness side connector and try to take off... It's only when I try take off it shut down...

Yea I think thats what it is... But I tried disconnecting the switch at the harness and jumping it but the neutral light won't cOme on... It does start with the clutch pulled in but still won't take off in gear...

If I understand you correctly...   Jumping the harness won't make the neutral light come on.

IF the kickstand switch is bad, it cold act like the kickstand is down - even if it is up - and it will kill the ignition as soon as  you start to release the clutch.

If you jump across the kickstand plug, defeating the switch, then it will act like the kickstand is UP - as long as the jumper is in place - and it should allow  you to release the clutch and not kill it.  If it does, this effectively shows the switch is bad.

From what I'm hearing I can't think of anything other than kickstand switch
In other words, it SOUNDS like even with the kickstand UP it does EXACTLY what it is supposed to do when the stand is DOWN.

With kickstand up or down its starts  even in gear...

With or without the clutch lever depressed?  With the clutch depressed it SHOULD start whether or not the stand is down, and whether or not the bike is in gear.

The stand switch is designed to prevent you from moving with the stand down. If the switch is bad the bike thinks the stand is down even when it isn't so it shuts down the bike immediately once the clutch is released.

It stalls once I let out the clutch... It idles fine in neutral and it idles once in gear with the clutch pulled in... Once I let out(even with a little throttle) it shuts off...

Ok... here's what I am hearing...

1) Idles fine in neutral with kickstand down and clutch NOT depressed.
2) Idles fine in neutral with kickstand UP and clutch NOT depressed.
3) Idles fine in GEAR with kickstand up and clutch depressed.
4) Stalls in gear with kickstand up upon release of clutch. (If kickstand is down and clutch is released the bike will shut down.)

- Start the bike, leave the kickstand down, depress the clutch, shift into first... slowly release the clutch. Does the bike shut down? It should... if it doesn't there is a problem with the kickstand switch.

- In #4 above does it shut down immediately or start to move when you slowly release the clutch then stall?
- Any change when you give it more throttle while releasing the clutch?

If it shuts down immediately upon slowly releasing the clutch with the bike in gear regardless of throttle position... that points to the kickstand switch.

Start again and explain exactly what is happening.

Sit on the bike. Depress the clutch and start the bike. Ensure its in neutral and release the clutch... does it continue to run?

Assuming it does... lift the kickstand, depress the clutch, put the bike in gear... what happens?

There is also a clutch switch and a neutral switch. Search on the forum to get more information or wait untill a more experienced member helps you with the details. The clutch switch is near the clutch lever at lest. So you could clean the connections and check it.

So I tried jumping the switch harness with a u joint pin type wire and the bike turned on but didn't read that it was in neutral and it still stalled... ??? Could be something else? Is there a clutch switch? I'm still going to look into the sidestand switch. Bit more but so far I've tried the jumping technique and nada... :/

Under the left side chrome cover (if you have one), is a bunch of connectors. Here is a diagram that will help you find the side stand wiring harness. It's a 2 wire plug #55 on the diagram. I labeled a couple of other land marks.

Do u mean the switch by the battery? I think that's where the cable leads to...

I believe he's speaking of the kick-stand switch.  Should be on the frame by the kickstand.  Unplug the switch.  Install a jumper wire (u-shaped hair-pin type piece of wire) to connect the wires on the plug end coming from the bike wiring harness (NOT the connection on the switch itself).  Try to start.

If that works, the switch is bad.

This is assuming it's a normally-open switch (i.e. switch is "open" with kickstand down, and closes, making the connection, when the kickstand is put up).  It's unlikely it's normally-closed (EG opposite of normally open)

The switch side and the harness side of the connector. Jumping the wires on the harness side will bypass the switch, jumping the wires on the switch side will do nothing.

I agree wi/ Troll.  That sounds like it almost has to be the sidestand switch.  Did you put the kick stand up?   ::) just kidding, probly a bad switch.

Not a silly question... i had that problem the first bike i bought with a kickstand switch.

I'd try jumping across the side stand switch connector on the harness side, and see what happens.

Ok, let me see if I have this straight...the engine will idle ok, but stalls when you try to get moving from a stop...silly question, but does it roll ok if you push it around? I'm still thinking this is a problem with the sidestand switch......Does it stop as soon as you put it in gear, or when you start to ease out the clutch
