PAINT QUESTION

I have have had to touch up faded paint several time.  This where the scanner proved to work very well.  Factory colors would never match so I have gone the custom mix and match aproach to fill the bill.

Thanks for all of the great info.. I am a student of the prime, paint and gloss school of thought myself. Buying 3 cans of compatible product from Color Rite puts me well north of $100.00 with shipping costs. The only color match surfaces that I have are my gas tank and fenders, so I'm not real keen on dabbing paint to find a exact color match. I'll make some calls on Monday to some local paint shops and see if I can get my color scanned and mixed. I had not thought of the time fade to the paint on my Drifter so Color Rite may not be the way to go anyway.

Sorry if I mislead anyone here.....I myself go to the local paint supplier here in town,They deal with any type of paint project your trying to tackle.

When ever I'm matching paint for projects I myself go to my local paint store here in town and give them the color code.

This is true but the problem is Auto paint store typically don't have paint code/paint formula's for all  bikes.

Whenever I need a color match, I go to my local paint supplier and he uses a scanner like the Dupont Chroma vision Color Scanner and scans a piece of whatever I need matched.  Then they do their magic.  To do it right they need to keep the actual piece to dab paint onto until they get the color I need.  Typically this process is free providing I buy a quantity of paint otherwise there is a fee for all their effort.

When ever I'm matching paint for projects I myself go to my local paint store here in town and give them the color code.I did this with a few projects such as truck tail light covers etc. and they matched right uo to the factory color.Honestly looks like the items came with the vehicles.Being my projects were small I had them put the paint in a rattle can.I've always done the projects in three steps :
1)Prime
2)Paint
3)Gloss
This is what the owner recommends were I buy my materials and like I said it has always came out great.If you have the access to this procedure this is the route I would suggest.Very cost effective IMOP

Some auto-body paint supply outfits will mix paint to your requirement and put it in a rattle-can for a few extra bucks; might be worth looking into.

Also, some places that mix automotive paint have a way to read the color with their "colorimeter" (I don't know if that's what it's called), to give you an exact match (more or less).  Sometimes this will match closer than a color mixed to the original factory color - because the paint on the car/bike has faded.  If you have a paint gun, or access to one, that might be the way to go.  However, thinking about it, the smallest quantity they can mix would more than likely end up costing you as much or more than the color rite, so might not be the way to go.

Greetings fellow VDRs,
I ride a 2006 800 Drifter that is ebony black and galaxy silver in color. I want to paint the triangular shaped side covers that are on the rear swing arm. For whatever reason these covers are ebony black from the factory, but would look so much better if they were galaxy silver. I know that Color Rite has factory match spray paint available, but boy are they proud of it dollar wise.  Here is my question. Has anyone done research or experimentation with Dupli Color automotive spray paint that is a match or very close to the original galaxy silver color? The Dupli Color at $7.00 a can beats the heck out of Color Rites $33.00 a can, not to mention that the Dupli Color is available locally and shipping would be added to a Color Rite purchase. Any and all info., such as Dupli Color codes or color names, will be greatly appreciated.
