are these rails required

Meant my other LEFT... yeah the bottom/right one is the grab rail and isn't required.

I beg to differ, having just reinstalled my grab rail.  Using his picture, right-reading, the right one supports only one thing: a scared rider's hands.

The left one is definitely required. It is actually the structural element that supports the seat. The right one is the grab rail, but isn't required.

The left one is needed as the nut that holds the rear of the two-up seat fastens to it.  The right 'rail' is the grab rail that is up behind the seat and I took it off long ago with no ill effect.
