There is a reserve fuel switch on the in-tank pump. The switch is a thermistor that is off when submerged in fuel and on when dry. This is the switch that lights up the low fuel light. You will notice the low fuel light will flicker sometimes before going solid... the wash motion in the tank would cause that to happen. Also, it might come on momentarily then stay off for a bit, depending upon the terrain.

I don't know exactly at what level it comes on, but 99% of the folks I have talked to indicate they get in about 3.5 gallons after the light comes on. So I expect there is at least 1.5 gal left. Where the fuel is picked up matters, so you may not actually get every drop out of the tank either.
How many miles left? Really depends upon your MPG, terrain etc. I would expect about 40 miles, but could be a lot more. I have never allowed mine to get empty... not good for fuel injected bikes... but this should give you an idea.

ok so I was wondering about this.. I have an 02 1500 so by the specs it has a 5 gal tank.. well the past 2 fill ups as soon as the light came on I went to gas station and topped off.. I held like around 3.4 or 3.7 gal. so does that mean when the light comes on I have 1.5 left??? seems much for reserve.   as far as mileage I went 154 miles and the fuel light came on when I filled up it took 3.4 gal. and I was running about 85 mph. so roughly thats 44mpg

Gonna look into those mods Troll, Thanks for all you do to help us all here.
Id love to get 50 mpg. Prob on the HWY thats doable. But down here in the hills of Southern OH. I get 40-45.  150 miles and IM looking for a gas pump.   :o

yup... Over 40mpg for me regularly.

< supposedly got 50mpg this past weekend?!? ... always depends on how full you fill your tank...>

Only mod on bike is Vance & Hines.  Been using Stable every now and then, I posted a bit ago about a hellacious knocking noise at WOT on the highway (was just opening 'er up to pass peeps and thought "what in the hell is that noise?!?!")...

I'll go close to 200 miles sometimes before even filling and still have almost a gallon in the tank.  I love the idiot light!!!  Damn thing comes on and I still have almost 2 gallons left in the tank?!?  What the eff???  ;)

The fuel mileage issue has one I have been wrestling with since I got it. I am now, after making some mods (which I have posted under fuel injection mods) getting between 45 and 49 mpg. Normally, the low fuel light came on at almost exactly 140 miles, now it's 185...I rode 137 miles today, and the fuel gauge reads half a tank. I changed tires sizes and profile about 500 miles ago, and installed a speedo healer at the same time. I rode on the interstate for around 50 miles, adjusting the correction so the odometer is as close to perfect as I can get it within the range of the healer (-03.4%), and the sped is 3 mph off, reading high. I, too have the peace pipe, and I'm running 20-50 full synthetic Valvoline motorcycle oil, 28 psi in the front tire, and now 34 psi in the rear. Couple of weeks ago I rode to Road America to do an ERC class. I filled up at 160 miles (20 miles outside of Elkhart lake), and it took 3.47 gallons, which is like 46 mpg and change...Half the trip is county roads at about 60 mph, and half at 70-75 on the interstate.

I'm riding a 2001, with a Cobra FI2000, and road house pipes. Not sure of the actual gas mileage.  I would say somewhere between 35-40 mpg's.  From full until the yellow low fuel light comes on I get about 125 miles.  But only have to put in 2 1/2 - 3 gallons of fuel and it's full again. My FI light stays on full time. When the road house pipes where installed the 02 sensors where never installed so it runs rich. getting that fixed and a good tune up done on my baby this winter.

Speaking of the low fuel light, any one have a semi educated guess on about how many miles you have left once it comes on? I really don't want to find out the hard way.  I already have several friends called Gas Can and I don't want to join their ranks.

Mine is a 99 too and I get around 38 mpg. I have no power comader and have the Cobra peacepipe exhaust.

I ride a 2002 1500 with a thunder intake, a power commander 3, and long shots. I get between 39 and 48 mpg depending on how and where I ride. On average I get about 45mpg.

I think they changed the tank size after 2000 so I cant speak on range for yours but I go about 150 miles and still have a quarter left on the gauge. I rarely push it any further than that without filling up.

I'm riding a 99 1500 Drifter and kinda wundering what kind of mileage some of you are getting per tank .
