Speedo change-over

Hi, I've got a white speedo-face on my 1500 & would love to change into a black...

Clubman, welcome to the forum....
I solved my desire to get a white speedo face in the following manner....
1) I found a 1500 with a white speedo face..
2) I bought the speedo face....   along with the whole bike.
3) kept the 800 so now I have a black speedo and a white one 

That's a three year old thread, the previous owner of my bike cut into th cover from underneath and removed the top and fitted an Indian mph speedo, then refitted the top with araldite..I've had no problems with it.

Sure Chief, I realize they both must come different - white only on the 1500's.  I really like the white face a lot better, and started this thread to see if anyone has successfully changed over a white face onto a 800, or knows if they would fit.  From Troll's feedback, the prospect appears grim...

All 800's have BLACK faces...

'99 and '00 would probably fit, anything later won't. The dashes are all different, the tanks are all different, and the big thing is the electronic speedo has a pickup in the trans for the speed and odo.  Yes, mine is an '01, and it has the 5 gallon tank. If you lift the cover off the instrument cluster, you find there is no cut out in the tank, just the wiring harness and 3 pins to mount the cluster. From pictures I have looked at, the '99 and '00 have the same cluster as the 800, but with an added fuel gauge and an efi indicator light

Troll, yours is an 01 if I remember??  so it has the digital odometer, but still has the white face, right?   Do you see any downsides to the digital, other than it's not "quite" as retro looking as an all-mechanical??  I imagine, though, there are advantages to the digital, maybe? ?

I'm sure you're right about the wiring - if you put a white 1500 speedo over on an 800 (if it would even fit at all) you would at least have to deal with no wiring for the gas gauge.  It's already starting to sound like a bad idea.

Hmmm  Maybe I can convince the wife that I need two drifters - one 800 and one 1500---  So I can figure out which parts will change over on what bikes, and then I'd be sure to get what I wanted....  not likely.....

I did a little googling, and found a picture of a '99 1500 with a white speedo face. Keep in mind that the '99 and 2000 have mechanical speedos and '01 and up 1500s have electronic, while the 800s all have mechanical speedos. I don't know for sure, but the 800s don't have a fuel gauge, and the 1500s always did....just thinking wiring might become an issue

Well spring is coming, and I've sold some stuff to raise funds to buy a Drifter.  Believe it or not, after thinking about it all winter, posting here, and reading other posts, I still can't decide on a 800 or 1500.  One minute I want the trouble free shaft drive and FI, the next minute the smaller/easier handling/ better MPG (maybe?)/ some would say more indian-like bike sounds better.  It will probably come down to actually finding one I like close enough to drive to.

One thing that I really like on the 1500s is the white-faced analog speedo.  I have never seen one on an 800.  Does anyone know if this white-face can be changed over on the 800?  Is this something to entertain?  It may seem like an insignificant thing, but I really think the white speedo dial is a really cool look.  I'd hate to come down to that for my final decision, but if I can't decide any other way....
